They "help" because magnets suppress symptoms by confusing afferent nerve signals (the nerves which bring messages to the brain and inform about the damaged area). The pain (which is the symptom of a problem) goes away, But the CAUSE remains and continues doing a lot of damage in your body. It's like clearing away the smoke, closing the door and letting the fire burn happily while pretending your house is perfectly safe because there is no smoke. That's how magnets work and that is why magnetotherapy is so popular - and so dangerous. People get what they want (no more pain) and don't care about the cause of their problem. After a while they get new symptoms because the cause is still there and got worse, but they don't realize the connection between the old symptoms, the magnets and the new ones.. Moreover, it has been proved by acupuncturists that magnets disturb the meridian energy - therefore the energy feeding all your organs, including the heart! I don't think you want to do that to yourself. Do you? Magnets are an alternative to painkillers, but unless someone has an incurable disease and wants to avoid taking strong painkillers or morphin, I would stay far away from magnets of any kind.

No, they do not work. The only studies that have been done were either flawed (no control group, etc.) or have shown them not to be of any improvement.
Magnetic fields exist all around us. We live in magnetic fields all the time. The idea that introducing a rather weak magnetic field is somehow going to help is absurd.
The thought process is that the magnets impact the iron in the blood. The thing is, though, even if it did work, it would cause the iron to build up around the magnets. Iron in the blood stream improves your blood's ability to carry oxygen (they like to give blood with high iron content to premature babies as they need the extra oxygen). So, having your iron stuck in one spot would diminish your blood's ability to carry oxygen, and no good can come of that.

They work like a placebo: if you believe they work, they do. And they're not good around computers.
