Why doesn't it bother people that congress oversteps and misinterprets what antitrust means?

No, this isn't a politics question. It would have been had certain congressman not threatened the NFL commissioner. Everyone jumped all over me last night when I tried to explain that congress should not intervene in such matters. The NFL did not violate antitrust laws, because the NFL network is available to everyone. The problem is that certain people chose a cable company over a satellite provider. That was their choice. Saying the NFL network is only available to 40% of Americans is not accurate, the NFL network is available to all, you just have to pick the right provider.

Update:

Right Zach, but why then didn't they intervene when ESPN was given MNF?People without cable couldn't watch those games either? Also, why would they have not intervened on behalf of the hearing impaired when the NFL blocked out local non-sold out games from television? I do want everyone to be able to see the games, but I just don't want our government intervening on non-government issues.

Update 2:

ummmm....crackcat, I don't think you know what communism means. A good example of communism is when the government clearly oversteps its authority, as it did in this case.

Update 3:

Coltsgirl, like you I have spent many Sundays sitting in bars watching the Colts games. For the past 6 years, we have purchased the NFL sunday ticket because we figured spending $50 a Sunday for food and drinks was more expensive than the Sunday ticket was.

They overstep and misinterpret every other law so I guess people have just learned to expect it.

I agree with your analysis though! Very well thought out!

Very good arguement and I agree 100%

On the flipside though...the NFL should not have put games on a network that not everyone could get without changing cable providers or switching to satellite. I personally think all games should be on one of the 4 major networks (and not ESPN or the NFL Network).

Actually people in Apartments can't get Satellite in most cases. Still Anti-Trust DOESN'T apply because I could find a bar. Anyway there was a question on here about who thinks Congress needs to find better things to do or something like that. I totally agree that as a whole they probably do. I would have been interested to see what the exact language would have been though because Spector was involved and he tends to go by actual law. Since nothing came of their idle threat it doesn't matter. As to Kerry he is an idiot, nothing more and nothing less.

But why should people who can't afford cable in general miss out on some of the most important games of the season. If you recall the first game on the NFL network was Green Bay vs. Dallas, the game that gave Dallas home field advantage for the playoffs by beating the Pack. Why should reliable fans be forced to upgrade or change their package in order to watch football games? It may be available to all, but not affordable for all.

It is an anti-trust issue. The NFL has enjoyed a legal monopoly since 1961. What congress giveth, congress can taketh away. Get a clue.

I can't get the NFL network on Charter. Satellite isn't option either the forest is too thick around my house. What about people that live in apartments they can't get satellite either.
