Dog attacks another Dog?
I live in the country and my neighbor has a German Shepherd. The guy down the road allowed his Pit Bull to run free. I live in an area where there is a "no leash law". Meaning that you do not have to keep your dog pinned up or on a leash. But if the Dog attacks someone, or livestock, you are allowed to shoot and kill the animal. I do not do that. I do not like to kill animals regardless of what they do, unless a human life is at stake. Anyways, The German Shepherd attacked and nearly killed the guy's Pit Bull. This guy is all mad now about what happened, I mean who is at fault here? Shouldn't he have known the risk of what could happen if he lets his dog run free?
This is one law I cannot understand. Alot of times I feel like I cannot even go jogging down the road without being attacked by dogs. Its stupidity if you ask me.
Well, my dog was not involved, it was our neighbor's dog.
The fight occured on a property that does not belong to either dog owner. So, I'm not sure. I guess they are both at fault. But there is not much the police can do because of the laws in place. The police will simply say "If the Dog comes on your property, you have the right to shoot it".

I cannot agree with some of the prior comments, due to lack of information.
Was the pit bull on it's on property?
Was the pit bull on streets?
Was the pit bull on the GSD's property?
Did the GSD leave it's own property to attack?
Did the GSD attack because the PB entered it's territory?
If the GSD attacked because the PB entered it's territory, then it's the PB's fault.
If the GSD left it's property to attack the other do on streets, or anywhere off the GSD's territory, then the GSD is to blame.
Another factor to help understand is what triggered the attack.
Was it a fight over a bit** in heat?
Was there any food to fight over?
Does either dog have a tendency to attack other dogs that's already longstanding and/or well known?
It the GSD has had a sudden negative personality change, you might want to warn his owner that he should be checked for possible brain tumor.
I'm in a rural farming community, and all dogs run free, but most stay home (unless there's a bit** in heat) and most don't do more than chase and/or bark at the other dogs. They save attacks for the coyotes.
People who've preached that you should have a leash law are totally uneducated when it comes to life in the rural areas. You cannot judge country life by how things are done in the city.

First. Thank you for having the frame of mind of not wanting to kill animals. I hate to hear stories of animals being killed.
More to the point. Did the pit bull get attacked in the German Shepard's yard? If the Shepard was in his own yard, I think technically, the guy who owned the pit bull would be at fault because the pit bull came into the other dog's "territory", if you will. If they were both out of their own yards, I would think that nobody would be at fault just because you have that law that dogs don't need to be confined or leashed. Plus who started it? This pit bull might have done something and the shepard was just protecting himself. The guy should have known, not just the dangers of letting his dog run free, but the dangers of owning a pit bull. Pit bulls can be sweet dogs, but they have a nasty reputation and it holds true to a lot of pit bulls I've seen. Law or no law, if you own a dangerous dog like a pit bull, you should have it tied up to prevent things like this from happening.

The guy letting his pit bull run loose should have known better. Does your neighbor confine his German Sheperd or let it run free? Watch out if the owner of the Pit Bull is angry!! If this elevates to a serious level and the owner of the Pit Bull gets violent or harrasses anyone, don't hesitate to call the police! This may be something you want to solve in court.

Yes he should take the responsibility of a pet owner and know where his dog is running, and the chances he is taking with that animal by not having it on a leash. By the same token, if it is a fact that your dog attacked his dog, you must also take the responsibility of a pet owner and offer to help with any medical cost involved. Your dog may just as well have attacked a child, or an adult, dogs don't reason as to what they are attacking, human or another dog, if they are goign to attack they will do it. You should keep your dog pinned up or on a tether for awhile to be sure he/she is not vicious as well.

well this jsut goes to show everyone who reads this that pitbulls are NOT bad dogs. any dog can attack and kill and a pitbull is a less likely to do so unless the owner was bad. i think both were at faught and both should be punished. was the shepherd running around free or was he tied up? if he was tied up then the owner of the pit was at fault. but if not then they both were and both should work it out because. they should keep their dogs inside or in a fenced in yard. and this should also encourage your town to enforce leash laws as well.

Good on the german shepherd... i bet the guy is mostly angry because he got a pit bull and it was bettered... as whose fault it is... it will depend on whose land the attack happened... if the pitbull went and sorted out the german shepherd and the german shepherd got the better of the pitbull on his land then its the pitbull owners fault, but if it was reverse and it happened on the pitbulls land then its the german shepherds owner as the dogs where trespassing when they should have been contained... hope that makes sense...

i think it is the pit bull's owners fault.. he shouldn't have let his dog run free in the first place.. And if the pit bull came into the German Shepherd's territory.. the Shepherd was only defending his territory..

its the guys fault becuz if he had his dog on a leash then it wouldnt have gotten attacked by the german shepherd whom was probably just tryin to protect its territory. they really shouldnt have that no leash law.
