what can you do about cruelty in pet stores?

my review of a local pet store called Animal Jungle goes:

"they had a cruel 'After Christmas Reptile Sale' display where leopard geckos, small snakes, and pacman frogs were put into very small plastic containers and put flat in rows and columns. when a bird opened his cage and escaped in the bird department, the girl who caught him slammed him violently into the trashcan he was perched on and yelled 'you are evil' at him.

on top of that, they had way too many fish per tank, with lots of dead and dying fish. their channel catfish had tumor-like sores on their fins."

Is there anyone I can call about this? Like PETA or the BBB or something? It was really sad to see the geckoes in the tiny plastic tupperware containers. also, I didn't mention that the girl who caught the bird (I think it was a quaker) picked up the bird by what remained of his tail.

I guess you can report the pet store to maybe a local animal cruelty facility

If there is animals being abused, you call the police. Pet stores must abide by the law. You could call the humane society, but they'll just tell you to phone the police.

Other than that, there isn't a whole lot you could do.

As sad as it is, never ever buy pets at those stores. You may feel like you're saving them, but realistically, you're just making room for more animals to come into their store, be abused, and continue the cycle.

The best way to break the cycle of abuse is to never buy at pet stores that sell animals as pets, and spread the word!

I would first call the local humane society, and ASPCA. To see if they could come and investigate. Then I would contact PETA. If I thought that nothing was being done after that I would start calling local media ie. local news stations, newspapers. Anyone that would listen and get the word out so people would at least stop shopping there.

I got my bunny at a place like that. It was called Critter Country and when I called the store to ask about if they had Lionhead Rabbits in the store he was very rude to me. I had asked him to hold the rabbit for me because I was driving two hours out of town to get him and I didn't want to drive all the way out there just to be disapointed. He told me no because it was so close to Christmas.

So I decided to take the risk and drove all the way out there to get him. When I walked into the store he was with a customer so I walked around and was just checking the place out. ALL the fish tanks were green, the birds were in their own poo, and the reptiles were in gross cages where the cages were so cluttered you couldn't even tell what was in the cage.

I made my way to where the rabbits were and there was a giant lops in a TINY cage on the floor that wasn't for sale. In the bunny pin was my long haired lionhead who had no food, no water, and was laying in his own waste. It broke my heart and I told the man that I would take him.

However, to get my seven day warrenty on my rabbit i had to first buy food from the store. So I bought some and noticed that the man had put a very small box on the table. I was like "Awesome, he's going to put the food in a box." Come to find out he was going to put my 8 week old lionhead rabbit in a box made for a HAMPSTER. I asked him about this and he told me he had just put a ferret in it and he fit fine. Which, was a lie.

I took him home and had to brush out all the animal waste that was stuck in his hair! Its been two weeks since I got him and now he gets to excited and attention, he runs around my room and bucks like a horse. lol

I would google search a bit more information in regards to what you can do to complain about petstores. I also would stick to buying pets from larger petstores. Petsmart and Petco take great pride in the health and well being in their animals.

Make a complaint with all of the following organization. ASPCA in your area , your city business office, your local animal shelter, the Better Business Bureau. Contact the shelter, should be part of the police dept and file a report. Make sure they follow up.

Call your animal control services department for your city or county. I hope you're successful in getting something done here. I'm stunned at what you've described. I'm sure you'll get a lot of good advice - and thank you for caring enough to ask for it.

Call your local Humane Society and tell them everything you just wrote here. Give them the name of the store, the address and the phone number.
