25-year-old female with moderately high blood pressure and rather high pulse rate - should I be concerned?
I have a lower-management job in a small retail corp, and the season isn't quite over yet. I smoke one cigarette a day, half on the way to work and half on the way back from break. I had a problem with arrhythmia and low blood pressure as a teen, so I became paranoid and began checking my BP using a home monitor I've checked against my mother's (a nurse) - both parents have high BP. It's the distance between the numbers that is actually concerning me, but I don't know if that's what I should be worried about. My sleep tends to be short and erratic. And my diet is generally fast food. I'm just trying to figure out whether it's my habits or something else.

I think that you need to do some things to lower your blood pressure without drugs, since if you're only 25, you'd be taking medicine virtually your entire life. I would try exercising, mostly aerobic, like walking or low speed jogging. Your heart rate will go down once you are in better shape, since the heart will work more efficiently and thus will not need to beat as often to get the blood through your veins. High blood pressure can also be controlled by eating lower sodium foods. So cut back on the fast foods. Your doctor should have been telling you this long ago.

These random times on the blood pressure are comparing apples to oranges. You must take your blood pressure at the same time every day and record them. It must be on the same arm and you need to have been sitting quietly, no talking for at least 10 minutes in order to find out where your baseline blood pressure actually is. Any activity, emotion, stress can affect your blood pressure and your heart rate. Since most of your heart rates listed are in a normal range, I would assume the elevated ones are due to some external stimuli - caffeine, activity, talking, eating, etc. Blood pressures fluctuate every minute of every waking hour so you cannot rely of random blood pressure readings to determine whether you have high blood pressure or not. Spend another week taking your blood pressure when you first wake up and before you have started walking around and see where it runs. Write them down (along with your pulse rate). If all of them are elevated, then it is time to talk with your doctor about diet, exercise and maybe later, if these fail, medication.

your last three readings are pretty good. ideal systolic (top #) is 120 but 120-139 is considered to be ok as this number can change minute to minute. The diastolic (bottom #) should be lower than 90. in 90-95% of all cases of hypertension, the cause is unknown. However, because this has been a problem for you in the past, I would suggest that you talk to your doctor. Age is not a significant factor when it comes to blood pressure. Medication to control it now may be the answer you're looking for and it may benefit your health in the future. Hypertension is a very serious condition and should not be taken lightly. I hope i've helped you out. Please be assured that I am a health care professional and what i'm telling you is the truth. Please talk to your doctor.

You need to see the doctor
Number one controllable variable for these health issues per all the heart articles they gave be : DON'T SMOKE
Only 25 and these a resting readings.
I am in my 40's and before I did the crappy(fish) flop and went to the hospital last august 2007, my readings were averaging 140/90 98
now with meds 110/60 80
no more salty items, chips, pickles and processed foods..
how is your weight?
after you see the doctor, start walking 30 minutes every day
Also check sleep apnea, diabetes

I think that you are just too concerned about every little fluctuation , these are pretty normal. Unless you actually have a problem, like dizziness, or anything else that SHOULD worry you then go to a doctor and take care of it. Otherwise you are going to be miserable worrying about every little change in which like I said is normal. My recommendation go see a professional, and if they say that is normal, go with it and live your life :) Hope this helps you and have a great 2008!!!

If you are really concerned then change your lifestyle. Stop smoking and stop eating junk food and get regular aerobic exercise.
Or you'll end up like your parents.

You need to quit smoking and you need to be concerned. You should go for a check up as soon as possible. Family history and your diet are both factors.
