had this problem too, i tried reformatting it with other programs. it failed, it seemed that i learned that it was broken.
it's cracked, i had mines recently broken. when the computer cant detect a hardware, it's broken physically. if its slightly detected, and unable to reformat, which where reformat deletes all the files, but if its unable to, it's because that it's broken =/.
i hate to say that its broken, and im sure you dont want to believe its broken but it's 15$ for a 1gig now, it's not that bad to give up on.

The contacts might be dirty. Use a pencil eraser or alcohol to clean them. Try plugging the card reader into a different USB port. Try to format it on the laptop. if you are using Windows 2000 or later click start, run then enter cmd
enter format x: /fs:fat32 where x is the drive letter of the card reader.
