Please help,I made a stupid mistake!?

The CD drive icon was'nt showing in My Computer. So I figured that the component must be missing some driver files.Heres the stupid part:I was do fed up that I physically unpluged the CD-ROM drive and pluged it in again. Now I'm stuck with this prob:when I switch on the machine in loads like normal until it gets to the part where it checks the hardware. It then tells me to wait and after that it tells me to insert the bootdisk(which I have).I inserted it,but I have no idea what to do further! Please help.

I'm using Windows ME(...and yes,I know I need upgrade!)

there has been error in unplugging the cd-rom while pc is on..the result is, the very thing being removed from its installation..though u restart the pc, as long as you keep it plugged it wont be reading anymore though it's a plug and play device..

this is what u need, totally unplug the cd-rom and cable (be sure it is off) then restart pc. after restarting it, turn off again...then safely plug the cd-rom back, be sure that ide cable is properly inserted..after all done, restart pc--during start up hit the key that will lead you to opening the CMOS setup so you can see whether your pc is reading the newly attached hdware...if its ok, hit F10 for saving, it will automatically restart..

at desktop, check mycomputer if it reads the drive.

shouldn't be a problem man.. Your CD drive is Plug n Play. I think maybe u. If it says u need a boot disk then i think your system somehow unable to detect the hard drive. Maybe u accidentally spoils either one of these :

    1. The IDE cable to the hard drive. Assuming u use separate IDE cable for the hard drive and CD Drive.

2 The power cable to the hard drive.

Check both. Try unplug the CD drive and start your system. Still not OK?Try replacing new IDE cable for both hard drive and CD drive. (hopefully u'll be able to solve ur second and first problem), To know wether your system is able to detect the hard drive, try entering setup and see the drive list. If your hard drive is not there then maybe something wrong with the IDE or power cable. If it is there maybe there is a hardware conflict (master slave thing etc). Adjust the jumper accordingly. I have to say there is a possibility that u corrupt your hard drive but according to your statement, that is unlikely to happen. Lastly try swapping IDE for your hard drive and without plugging in your CD drive. There is some (rare and stupid) case where faulty CD drive cause the system to go haywire.

I assume u are using IDE and not SATA coz most PC that use Win ME are old one (sorry mate. its a fact) and SATA is still not quite an option at that time.

btw. Sharing same IDE for hard drive and CD is not a good idea.

i think after inserting the disk, it'll auto search the file.

if it is still not working, plzz note down the file which the system is asking. & then search that file in either in CD or in computer.

after doing this , give a the path of that searched file in the window which is at your display(asking for inserting the cd for the missing file.

i m having slight less idea as u r using win-me as i am working on win-xp. in case of xp it automatically detects the hardware.

    take care

no need to worry, b'coz if any problem is occuring in computer system that is just occuring to teach something new to you........

It should be plug&play. You shouldn't be having this problem.

First step, boot in safe mode and roll back the disk driver.

If that doesn't work, consult google.
