Late at night in McDonalds in Osaka, girls are putting on makeup and curling their hair with curling iron??
I am currently holidaying in Japan, in Osaka. I went to McDonalds at 12 at night, and these young ladies (I'd say in their twenties, though who knows their real ages) are putting on makeup and curling their hair with curling irons while eating their McDonalds.
Is this normal for Japan? Who are these girls, what are they getting ready for? A night of clubbing?
For your info: Most people in Osaka don't speak English. It might or might not be different in Tokyo, I'm not sure.
thecheap: in western countries, people just don't do this in a public place.

I'm Japanese living in Osaka.
It's common all of Japan.
It's normal among young girls(maybe age13-30) but old ladies don't like to put on makeup in a public place because it's a bad manner.
For me,I don't like to do it in a public place.
I stayed in Canada for 2 years and I've never seen Canadian do it in a public place.
Japanese can put on makeup and brush their hair in the train.
And we have makeup area in the public wash rooms.
They have some reason why they put on makeup in a public place.
Reason1--- They don't have any time to make up at home because they slept over.
Reason2---They check their makeup before they meet their boyfriends. They want to be beautiful girls for them.
They want to keep their makeup all days
Girls whom you met at McDonalds are typical Japanese girls.
But to use curling irons are a little bit crazy.
They are getting ready for nightclubbing to get cool boys in the club!!
Some girls wear their fragrances in the train.
It's really bad!!!!!

The real answer is that these girls are probably teenagers. And that they have no particular purpose to their activities.
It's become part of the teenage dropout/ partially homeless culture here in Japan for teenagers to gather in places where they can sit 24 hours and just do make-up or hair. And then basically just walk around the city until dawn or later.
If you do happen to have a chance to get a connection with some of these girls, you might have a chance to help them get back into school, or even to go back to their families. As many of these girls choose to survive through money as part time prostitutes, even though they have families who are fully willing to support them. And even more are becoming pregnant by guys who are living the same lifestyle.

If the girls look like following pics, they are a hostess.

Or maybe they were univ girls who were about to clubbing.
Anyhow, nobody won't care even they were making up in the Mac.

Funny question.
>Is this normal for Japan?
I think it is.
>Who are these girls,
Normal local girls.
>what are they getting ready for? A night of clubbing?
We have a lot of places to have fun. Karaoke or many others. Who knows.
Everyone is in New Year holiday now.
I want to ask you what part of it is so surprising for you?
Addition:
>in western countries, people just don't do this in a public place.
What do you mean by "this"? Make-up and curling? People do not think it's a good manner to do it in public. But Japanese girls do it, anyway.

ROFL
sounds like they are younger than 20, otherwise they would be doing it at home.
sounds like someone doesn't want their parents to know what they are up to.
and I think your right..it's clubbing.
they aren't getting dollied up for ronald..they woulda done that before entering his domain!
rofl, thanks for the laugh, i needed one this chilly morning,
