Have you visited the tourist attractions near where you live? Why or why not?

It is commonly accepted that people tend to neglect the attractions in their own hometown. Have you been to visit them? The attractions, the historical sites, the museums? How often do you get there? What encourages you or stops you? And where do you live?

Update:

I live outside of Washington, DC and have always spent time visiting the attractions. My husband, however, grew up in this area and didn't see them until he was with me. His family never ventured into a museum or attraction. He did get to some museums with his school groups.

I am very interested about ongoing responses from all over the world.

I live 30 minutes for Canada's capital Ottawa and I haven't been to the Parliament Building's since I was a teenager. I'm now 60. I took my grandchildren to the mint where they make coins a few years ago but that's about all. I don't like crowds, traffic or walking too far because of my arthritis. Maybe I should be ashamed of myself but I'm not.

in general i love attractions of any sort and love to see the sights!! currently i live in houston, texas. i have also lived in austin, fort worth, and las vegas. no matter where i have lived and definitely visit, i see the sights at least once. as for museums and historical places, i go when they have an event of interest for me. museums are always repeat visits, 2-3 times a year minimum depending on the new stuff. this is also something my parents were always interested in, so i think that helped stir my interest. besides, when people come visit, you can help them find stuff to do if you have already been there to check it out. my favorite thing to do where i live and visit are the ghost tours and caves. sadly, houston is not abundant on either.

Yes, I do. I'm from Singapore and I do visit tourist attraction in my hometown. Mostly I bring my family or relatives in Singapore or from abroad to visit those tourist attractions. Mostly, I visit Little India, Chinatown, Arab Street, Clarke Quay and many museums in Singapore, like The National Museum and Singapore Philatelic Museum etc. The reason behind that since I leave near many tourist attraction in my hometown, why not visit them? Maybe I can even promote them to many others, whether is from local or from abroad.

Hi - good question and valuable everywhere - take my example

    I live in Paris ( since 1981 )

visited Eiffel tower once with stranger friends - once as I did not yet live in Paris - once as I was in a college far outside Paris ( 150 kms )

Musée du Louvre - once as I did not yet live in Paris

Musée des Invalides - random - a colleague of mine wanted to show his son the museum and we went there together

Musée de la Marine - Trocadéro - at a time when I needed strong documentary elements about ship construction

    Versailles similar ... etc etc

    Exhibitions =

You cannot have for the city where you live and work the same eyes as when being a tourist -

In Alabama I went to all of the local attractions at least twice a year.

In Oklahoma, I frequently went to Medicine Park, and the Indian reservation to see the buffalo.

In Sweden, visited many museums, libraries, and midsummer festivals.

In California, haven't seen any sights yet, but did go to Hawaii.

I'm an Explorer and try to enjoy everything around me.

That's actually quite remarkable. I have had a similar situation. When I was growing up, I lived right outside a major metropolitan area and rarely visited. I didn't really catch the "local tourist" bug until I met my second wife. We tend to go downtown just about every weekend now, and I find it very informative. We actually have a weekly podcast you might check out. Go to www.washingtontravelcast.com.
