Why are boxing rings square?

Back in the days, when people went bare-knuckles, there were no boxing rings. Instead, people formed a circle around the 2 boxers. Problem was that people don't usually stay away from the fighters but they would close in on the action, making the ring smaller. To keep the audience away from the fighters to make room, they got a rope and they staked it. Well, when you get a round rope and you stake it, it turns into a square.

That's why it's called a boxing ring and not a boxing square and that's how the boxing ring turned into a square.

You need a corner to return to plus you must consider the construction of the competing area.. The posts give the ropes stability enough to withstand the weight of the boxers crashing into them.

The ring could be a hexagon or octagon but then you'd have unnecessary posts.

David C. gets the nod. I didn't know the history nor did I see the misdirection caused by calling a square a ring (which is circular)

    Great question!

david c is correct. the easiest and most logical way to enclose or pen both animals and humans is a four posted perimetre.

it is called ring since it used to be a ring of people, or a ring of people holding a rope.
