Guitar beginner - help!?

I have just started with learning the acoustic guitar.

I know just the basic things yet (notes and all)

THe thing is, my fingers hurt quite much while pressing the strings (esp the 5th and 6th ones) making them numb and interferring with the playing.

Any advice on that?

And there was another thing too. We press fingers b/w two lines (fret). But I just saw a video on net and there, while playing chords, the players fingers was also seen on the lines.

Was it just that his fingers were there without him pressing any, or am I yet to learn some of it?

The correct placement of the fingers is directly behind the frets in normal play. To get a muted effect one can place the fingers directly on the frets.

Also the more you practice you will develop caluses on your fingertips and it won't hurt anymore.

Just wait for your fingers to get used to playing. After some time, you will have more ease in playing, don't you worry. And the finger on the fret thing, it often looks that way when we are watching but the finger is actually on the right place.

I'm also learning how to play the guitar, but lucky for me my boyfriend is an avid guitarist so he's teaching me and yes your fingers are going to hurt a lot! At least until you get callouses. Once you get those you'll be fine. Took me about two to three weeks of practice everyday for a few hours before the pain went away.

you've just got to grin and bear it. remember how soft your thumbs and first finger were before you played videogames? they'll eventually harden. its just a case of getting your finger used to playing. good luck
