neighbour complaining about dog barking?

I have 2 GSD dogs, my youngest 20 months sometimes barks at night and it annoys me too, not that it is continuous - she may bark for 2 - 3 mins but at night it feels like forever- but what she is barking at is the sound of other dogs barking in the distance - I have heard them - obviously my neighbour hasnt as they are that faint. She also barks if she hears strange noises - to which my neighbour never complained about when they looked out their window and realised it was an intruder in their garden at one time. So what would you do. Dogs bark - full stop, dont particularily want get her a collar, like I said the barking is NOT continuous.

Update:

My 2 dogs are in the kitchen - it is large 28ft by 18ft - so not confined in anyway, plenty of toys, food, chews and water.

Update 2:

when she does have her few minutes of barking - its normally late at night - early hours of the morn. When everything is ment to be quiet outside but isnt and she hears things -

i think ur neighbour should be lucky for having a dog awake barking because if there wasn't one wat if another intruder comes u wouldn't noe so u should tell ur neighbour that he is considered lucky to have a dog barking at night but if ur neighbour is really annoyed then get a bark collar or train it to not bark

A dog barking outside at night even for only a few minutes at a time could land you with a fine or worse if she reports you to animal control. I'm sure she will report you if you don;t put an end to it. Most people would. As you said yourself it seems like forever when they do bark.

Bring the dogs in over night. It should solve the problem.

Edit: I see the dogs are already inside at night so maybe crate training will help. Sorry it looked as if you were leaving the dogs out all night.

We sometimes have this problem with our younger Goldie. I ignore it because I have no neighbours. If it is other dogs barking that sets her off, leave a radio playing low in kitchen. I leave the tv on low when I am writing as my dogs bark at outside noise during the day. The low volume will mask the barking outside and keep her silent. Other solution is to get an ultrasonic bark buster which will stop her and discourage the behaviour.

where are you keeping her? because if its outside or in a kennel, then she is probably barking to get your attention, you need to know the difference between warning you and calling you. but if you tend to the dog every time she barks then she will only learn that she can get what she wants by barking, so no matter how much she barks leave her alone until she is quiet, always reward her with love and affection (try talking to your neighbors and tell them that she is going through some training and the barking will he will stopped, but that you just need sometime first) dogs cant help barking, its thier instinct. but a well trained dog will only bark when nessecary. your youngest dog is still trying to get a hold on what is nesscary, but she will learn. try to get her some professional traning or talk to your vet.

Where are your dogs while you are sleeping? Is there any way you could leave a TV or radio on for them? This might keep them from hearing the other dogs barking, but it also might keep them from hearing strange noises from an intruder.

Go to your neighbors with this idea, but also let them know that the dogs will be less of a help to them keeping intruders out... let them decide whats more important.

I would go and knock at her door and say you are really sorry about the dogs, and then explain that they do only bark when they hear another dog or someone walking near the house, let her know that they annoy you too,but that at least you feel safe with them around. I think if you be nice then she will try and understand a little better.

Dogs will be dogs. They are supposed to bark.

If it's not just continuous barking ,at nothing,I wouldn't worry too much about it. If your neighbor continues to complain, tell him to turn up his TV.

you could train her to stop barking when you whistle.

my nabours dog barks at night and they dont hear is so told me to fell free to tell her to shut up. so every time i heard her barking in the night i opened my window and whistleed to get her attention and told her to sush and go to bed. now all i have to do is whistle and she goes straight in.
