I'm sitting here listening to the kazoo solo in The Magician's Birthday by Uriah Heep and I was wondering...what's the absolute strangest solo by the strangest most off the wall instrument You ever heard in a Rock Song?

Not really a solo...but cool just the same!

    Then you have bands like The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and their song titled 'The Intro and the Outro'. It featured the following instrumentation;

    'Legs' Larry Smith - Drums

    Neil Innes - Piano

    Sam Spoons - Rhythm pole

Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell - Bass Guitar

    Rodney Slater - Saxophone

Roger Ruskin Spear - Tenor Saxophone

    Vivian Stanshall - Trumpet

At this point the lineup seems pretty normal huh? Well here's where it gets really strange:

    Count Basie Orchestra - Triangle

    Eric Clapton - Ukulele

    Billy Butlin - Spoons

    Adolf Hitler - Vibes

A Session Gorilla - Vox humana

Roy Rogers on Trigger (peeing sound)

    Princess Anne - Sousaphone

    Quasimodo - Bells

    Liberace - Clarinet

    Incredible Shrinking Man - Euphonium

    Garner Ted Armstrong - Vocals

Lord Snooty and Pals - Tap-dancing

Harold Wilson (former UK Prime Minister) - Violin

    Franklyn MacCormack - Harmonica

Sir Kenneth Clark - Bass Saxophone

    Peter Scott – Duck Call

    Casanova - Horn

    General de Gaulle - Accordion

Wild Man of Borneo - Bongos

    The Rawlinsons - Trombone

    Dan Druff - Harp

    Brainiac - Banjo

    Val Doonican as himself

Zebra Kid and Horace Bachelor - Percussion

    J Arthur Rank - Gong

Each band member is introduced by Bonzo's member Viv Stanshall. Viv can be heard a few years later introducing the instruments on Mike Oldfields 'Tubular Bells' album as well.

Here is a brief description of this great UK 60's psych band, along with a breakdown of characters involved in the recording of 'The Intro and the Outro:

I found an audio of the song on youtube:

Here's another video of these clowns...a must see...really!

Oh yeah, don't forget about the Ron Geesin/Roger Waters collaboration from 1970 called 'Music From the Body', in which organic sounds from the body, ie; burps, farts, breathing etc, were employed as instruments. There's never been anything quite like it...for a good reason!

Ron co-wrote Pink Floyds 'Atom Heart Mother':

The album also features an embryonic version of 'Breathe' for all you Pink Floyd fans!

Bagpipes at the end of Meat Loaf's 'Everything Louder Than Everything Else'

The opening of Jethro Tull's 'Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day' features the sound of Ian Anderson making and drinking a cup of tea.

Not a solo, but the kazoo in Jimi Hendrix's 'Crosstown Traffic'.

The Blackmore's Night song '25 Years' is played on the hurdy-gurdy, with a bagpipe chanter solo in the middle.

The end of Fleetwood Mac's 'Gold Dust Woman' features panes of glass being broken. Part of the 'Second Hand News' drums were actually played on the back of a chair. And 'Tusk' involved drumming on Kleenex boxes.

And there's a Peter Green era song where they find that the sound of 'leg-slapping' didn't sound 'leggy' enough, so they used a leg of lamb!

Darth - I can't believe someone finally brought-up The Heep!!

    - Yes the kazoo is strange, but I'm going to go with the most unusual (thus inventive) guitar solo - which for me is the end of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by VDGG with Robert Fripp of Crimson on guitar.

I don't know about strange instrument, but I do know that tom morello from Rage Against the Machine used to take the lead of his guitar cable and strum it on his pickups to create some off the wall sounds. try his solo on "bulls on parade" too. it almost sounds like he's scratching a record on a turntable!

OK...I just love the following two guitar solos because they kind of come out of left field....

Neil Young's incredible guitar solo on "Like a Hurricane"

The guitar solo on the song "trailer trash" by Modest Mouse. Just because it is unexpected and well-done.

    these are all jonny greenwood:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyKCwDJ7ZUc&feature...

the song is go to sleep, and i can only assume he is using witchcraft

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjV9dud_NY0&feature...

this is a second version of the above

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkU8YBHWd4&feature...

here he is using a violin bow on his guitar

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc1oaT0pDqo

here, he is playing an instrument called an ondes martenot, it looks like a keyboard or a piano but there's a string under the keys and you slide it along and it makes really drawn out and droning sounds

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIpwuG-us6k&feature...

here he is seen using more witchcraft, only now he doesn't have a guitar, just a little box that he seems to be wrestling with, ed joins in too

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_mMzOQpe0I

this solo is completely normal, it comes at 3:08 and its pretty short but it is my favorite of his

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0mtSjQvk3o

in this song, jonny plays the radio and makes other weird noises, there is also some crazy singing, a crazy bass part, and most importantly for this question, an absolutely crazy horn section

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WZIm2Yvmtc&feature...

i know you wanted rock songs, but here is rahsaan roland kirk playing a flute with his nose, so there

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CFfpFDKBO8&feature...

this is rahsaan playing three saxophones and a clarinet, he also makes a few strange noises during his flute solo, and shows off his circle breathing ability, and in addition to all of that, there is also a guy who asks "is hearing a bus passing by not music", he then continues to challenge our perceptions of the human anatomy

I love the Heep! rock on

The strangest for me is listening to that cash

register machine in the beginning of the song

Money by Pink Floyd, It has driven me crazy for years....don't know why. (like the song)

Can't beat the crackling Rice Kripies and sizzling bacon in Pink Floyd's Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, can you? Not sure if that's a legit solo though :0D

EDIT: What the heck is Kripies? I meant Krispies.
