How can I tell if my speaking volume is appropriate?

Are there any guidelines on what is considered speaking too softly or too loudly?

Ask a trusted friend who will answer honestly and not make fun of you. Phrase it in a "do I have food on my face?" way?

Too softly: people constantly ask you to repeat yourself.

Too loudly: other diners at the same restaurant are looking over at you.

when people ask you to repaet yourself that eihter means to speak up or quit mumbling and when people ask you to tone your voice down that generally means to turn down the volume.

if people repeatedly asking you to speak louder, or if people ask you to not be so loud.

Do people say "what"? all the time? Or do they say"shhhhh"
