I have a 79 Chevrolet Silverado with tranny problems?

It has a turbo 350. I can't get third gear, and when I put it into reverse, sometimes it goes, but it jumps into gear, and other times it does not go at all. What would cause this, and can it be fixed?

Both reverse and high gear in the th350 use one of the same clutch packs. It is reparable by having the transmission rebuilt by a reputable shop. But before you do, check your transmission fluid. If this is OK, then get 3 or 4 estimates on the rebuild along with the warranty from each place before you choose where to have it fixed.

That is a great transmission and one of the cheapest to rebuild. I pulled mine out of my car, took it to a shop and had them rebuild it. They did it for $550 and then next weekend I reinstalled it and it was as good as new. Not bad for a part that causes most people to send their car to the junkyard.

I'm sure you could drive it to a shop and have them pull it and rebuild it for around $1000.
