Why is Jan 6 "Epiphany" Day? Did you even know it was?!? What's "Epiphany" Day any way?

What's "Epiphany" ??? Will you do any thing in honor of the Epiphany?

What do you understand "Epiphany" to mean?

Ancient Liturgies speak of long, seldom heard words like... Theophany, Illuminatio, Manifestatio, Declaratio ... in regard to the "Epiphany".

I do NOT remember ANY of those words EVER explained at my church.

Do these words say anything to you?

How about the word "Epiphany". What's "Epiphany" Day any way?

Why is it celebrated today?

Is this the day the Magi are presummed to have arrived at the stable, about a dozen days after His birth?

Blessings on this resurrection Sunday of the "Epiphany" to you an yours, what ever it is.

Epiphany comes from a Greek word which means manifestation. This is therefore the day on which we celebrate that God makes himself known to mankind. (manifest)

Originally it was the celebration of Christ's Baptism but in the West it was first the date on which we celebrated Christ coming (Christmas) but now it is usually the celebration of the coming of the Magi who were not Jews.

It is a reasonable guess that the Magi cames some time after the birth of Jesus - probably about two years. Read again the story and the decision of Herod about which babies to have killed.

The magi did not visit the infant in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt because Herod commanded the children 2 and under be slaughtered.

The wise men who were astrologers were sent to find the child and report back to Herod so Herod could kill him. (By the way he didn't become Christ until his baptism so he was not the Christ child. He was Immanuel or Jesus.) But the wise men just returned to their homes after giving the gifts to the child....he was a few months old by then. They did not have fast transportation.

His parents were married but did not engage in sexual intercourse until after Jesus birth. So Jesus had a legitimate birth.

They did however go on to have other children. Joseph died but Mary and Jesus' siblings followed his ministry.

I have always heard people say they had an epiphany...a thought....that is a far cry from what you describe.

Sure, I know it's Epiphany. My church celebrates it faithfully every year, year after year, as it has for many centuries. Epiphany honors the Magi coming to the Christ Child, the baptism of Christ, and also the revelation to mankind of God in human form (in other words, Jesus Christ). For some people, Epiphany is the start of an entire season that occurs between Advent and Lent. For them, it ends at midnight on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras); then comes Ash Wednesday, signaling the beginning of Lent. It's also the beginning of the social season for Mardi Gras, and today, the first "king cakes" will be served, and they'll continue to be served until the end of Mardi Gras.

I find epiphanies (appearances) can be deceiving,

and know the truth makes you free of believe the lies.

As for blessing(s), let's consider blessedness of "man":

blessed the "man" to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

(comparing law & grace "blessed" in Ps 32 & Rom 4)

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

I just heard on Christian radio that this is considered the 12th day of Christmas, but I didn't catch what they said after that.

I didn't know anything about today being Epiphany Day. Hmmmm.

Interesting facts that you shared. Thanks.

It is he birth or manifestation of God in a human form...

Jesus is the illegitimate child of Saint Joseph. The Virgin Mary was never married to God the Holy Ghost, either! She was a single mother when she was birthing God the Son Jesus Christ! This is the only reason why the Early Church Fathers came up with the brilliant idea to keep Mary a virgin for ever otherwise the morality of the whole affair would be very, very questionable and most likely unacceptable because God the Son Jesus Christ would be vulgar b-a-s-t-a-r-d, but the perpetual virginity idea made Christianity to fly!!!

Deuteronomy 23:2 (KJV) A ******* shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

On top of all that God the Son Jesus Christ turned out to be a vicious killer of innocent children just like his God the Father in Heaven, or is it God the Holy Ghost his real Father? Anyway, both of them are dedicated killers (Acts 5:1-11)!

Revelation 2:23 (NIV) (Jesus says) I WILL STRIKE HER CHILDREN DEAD. Then ALL THE CHURCHES WILL KNOW that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

Luke 19:27 (Jesus was very excited telling this story!) But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them–bring them here and kill them in front of me.

Only a blood thirsty tyrant would talk like that! Christians demand a much higher standard of morality from their clergy, and the preachers, and the politicians than from Jesus Christ! That's hypocrisy! Why is it that in Christianity everything is KILLING… KILLING… KILLING… and more KILLING…??? Isn’t Christianity a Barbaric religion just like Islam? Christians hide the fact that all Jewish boys under the age of 2 were slaughtered because of the birth of Jesus! Jesus got away because his adoptive father Saint Joseph had a dream to scram to Egypt in the middle of the night! All the sugar coating in Christianity is so repulsive! Can any Christian understand? Please, reporting me is not the best answer it only proves how puny is the Bible God!

Yes, it is in commemoration of the visit by the Magi. In Eastern rites it celebrates the Baptism of Jesus. Either way though, the celebration is about the revelation of Christ to humanity.

Theophany refers to the Eastern rites' celebration of the Baptism.
