There are several conditions which can cause ischemia to the colon.
Ischemic Colitis is inflammation of the colon. If severe, it can cause necrosis (tissue death) and require surgical removal of the affected area (colectomy). Here is a link for more info:

Intestinal ischemia and infarction may be caused by blood clots or arterial or venous disease. Here is a link for more:

Hope this helps!

It's very serious and can be life threatening. It means that there is not enough blood supply to an area of the colon. If the blood supply is low enough, it can cause the tissues to die. This is a life threatening situation. Often, the dead part of the colon needs to be surgically removed. Try looking up paralytic bowel. This may lead you to ischemia of the colon.

What kind of workouts do you do? Which positions do you sleep? I have suffered from it for awhile now , and as a very active 21 yr old female my doctor told me to alter my physical activity, I was running a lot and doing a lot to strenuous excersizes that irritated my organs. I know that sounds crazy but after i altered my workouts and did a lot of swimming and such.... everything stopped. I would ask your doctor.... I am on birth control too and i was never notified that the hormones could react like that. Give the physical lifestyle alterations a try. if not... go back to your gastroenconologist and get another opinion.
