Tattoos in the professional workplace...?
Per my personal choice, I've limited mine to places that are easily concealed whilst wearing a suit... although, theoretically, bosses and the rest of the business world are supposed to be becoming more keen to Gen-Y's styling (and BETTER be for the sake of progression), I think there will always be stigmatization (spoken or not) of those who wear their beliefs on their sleeves... so to speak.
Outside of the realm of Art, can anyone think of an industry where this is NOT true... from a management perspective that is?

I think if the business world were to deny employment to those with tattoos corporate America would be turned on its ear. Of course many choose to hide them, but much like yourself, I think it's a personal decision. Many people professionals or not ) Prefer to keep their work persona separate from their " play " persona . I believe this has more to do with human nature than getting ahead in this rat race. I have seen Doctors, Pharmacists, lawyers, and bank officials all with tattoos. Granted they were not prominently displayed, but short of having your face and neck tattooed it should not be an issue. Incidentally, I have worked for a pharmaceutical company as a receptionist and my tattoo was never an issue.

It will vary by employer ... but I can tell you that there is not a major stigma associated with tattoos in most skilled trades.
Give the baby boomers a few more years to get out of the workplace and there should be much more reasonable opinions on body art.

of course there are..think of professional sports. but i wouldn't go a "mike tyson" , never. but body tatoos that show when wearing shorts or short sleeve wear...that's not stigmatizing nor is it offensive..as long as it's done in good taste, i suppose it won't offend.
it also depends on the typr of business. many old-economy companies have gone nice/casual the last decade, and as such tatoos do pop up here and there, i don't find it offensive.
again it depends on the size and image tattooed..i know many professionals in their 20's and 30's and even 40's who have them yet they don't display them in an "in your face" manner/fashion.

I think if you want to work somewhere and not be looked down on for tatoos I would try:
Coffee shop
Bars
Hair salon
Certain Retail clothing stores
Skate shops
Teaching an extreme sport
Alternative/health grocery store
New age bookstores
Good luck, none of those pay great... :(
