Is upgrading my sound card worth it?

I have a sound card built into my mobo that supports 7.1 sound plus a stereo line in and mic. My girlfriend just bought me a fantastic 1010 watt surround system. what i am wondering is if it is worth the extra few dollars to invest into a seperate sound card, or if the one on the mobo is going to be about the same?

I figured if there wasnt much diffrent than there would be little market for them, but I wanted and experienced point of view.

that all depends on if you like the sound of a wet fart or a dry fart. The old cards been lying around awhile and has dried up it will sound like a dry fart. The new one will still have some moisture so it will sound like a wet fart. your choice. they will both smell relitivly the same though. most people prefer wet farts because they are a little smoother, dry farts tend to hurt the ear but not for all people. good luck

I always find that when dealing with sound that the speakers its coming out of always seems to me anyway more important than the Sound Card itself. I have my JVC Sound System in the back of my 7.1 Onboard Sound Card and i find that to be amazing!

Personal when building computers and so on i really don't consider the sound card to be that important as i find a good set of speakers will always do the trick! Plus if your motherboard has a 7.1 Onboard Sound Card then id think that is pretty damn good itself!!

I only find the need to buy Sound Cards when your starting to Mix Music and get down the very little detail in sound!

At the end of the day though its your money! I hope you choose wisely! Plus hope i helped out!

7.1 sound is about as good as it gets. Upgrading to a more expensive sound card may actually give you better quality but it may not, depends on the quality of the hardware (motherboard) and audio software.

Think you should ask yourself what you are using it for. Then post what type of onboard soundcard it is and what software are you using with it.

I made the mistake of dishing out $70 for a higher end sound card. I consider myself a pretty big audiophile but I really have no idea what difference it made. if you have 7.1 onboard then stick with it.
