Windows Vista vs. XP - Help!!!!?
Am trying to help my in-laws... They are looking at getting a notebook computer, and can go with Vista Home Premium or XP. I am little help since I have had the same computer for several years and since I am having no problems, am not currently paying much attention. I have heard that a lot of programs they may have on their current Windows 98 system may not be compatible, as well as many others. I have also heard some Vista nightmares.
If they go with Vista, will they pretty much have to get all new software for things like genealogy (Family Tree Maker 5?), digital picture downloads, etc.....???
Any other suggestions as far as what they should get are appreciated. They aren't going to use advanced applications or gaming, anything like that. They want to try to get good value - whatever they get will be greatly faster than the one they have had for a good while now. Thanks all!!!!!!!
Please give some insight as to why you are saying one vs. another - most all come with Vista now, so options may be limited.

I personally like XP better, but Vista will be a little more "future proof". Pretty much a most normal applications will work on both XP and Vista, but if somewhere down the line companies start developing for Vista only, then they might need to upgrade.

i exploit vista and there is quite no issues as long as you replace residing house windows at present and characteristic good antivirus secret agent ware ---- > as with something else of residing house windows. the in effortless words concern ppl have with vista is that its no longer backwards properly matched along with your older application/hardware so except its a very enormous product or is particularly new youre probably gonna want to improve your stuff. also at the same time as it involves vista and XP in case you attempt to purchase a computing gadget with XP youre going to be paying more advantageous than you should for a computing gadget with crappy specs compared to vista. If youre paying for a clean computing gadget elect vista because its the destiny and XP is going to be supported a lot less and a lot less vs vista it truly is getting a service %. in early 2008

XP, it is the most stable Windows OS available and is compatible with 99% of the software, where Vista is still unstable and is not backwards compatible with software. for thier use, XP is the best choice.

well its true that vista has compatibility issues, but some programs from xp still work on vista, but im not sure about 98. they should get vista because microsoft will soon release vista sp1 so it should get better. i have vista ultimate myself and have no problems with it.

Definitely go with XP if its available. Nothing they do is going to require Vista, and it's only going to confuse them. XP is faster across the board than Vista as well.
