Variable bit rate versus constant bit rate?

I want to convert some of my music to 320 kbps and would like the absolute best sound. Which rate is better? Also, could the variable bit rate analyzer accidently get it wrong and give me muddy sections etc.

    You already know at what rate you want to convert the music into. Since a VBR is only going to lower the quality when it "thinks" that there isnt much change, CBR is a better method. Since you are looking for the best quality, I wouldn't rely on someone else's bit rate.

    You can pretty much rely on codecs getting it right these days. Variable bit rate encoders are very careful about calculating a good compression ratio. In general, your best bet is to set a target bit rate (which defines audio quality) but enable VBR. In general, the codec will be smarter than you are.

    You're not going to get the 'absolute best sound' with a lossy algorithm like MP3 or Ogg. Both of those are lossy encoders i.e. they throw away audio data. For most applications they're fine, but if you want to compress audio without degradation, then you will need to use a lossless encoder. The best one out there at the moment is the Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC). This will give you up to 50% compression (but not the 90%+ you get with lossy codecs).
