I want to rent a condo in Montreal for a month. I live in Michigan. How do I protect myself from scams?

Anyone can post an ad on craigslist or the newspaper saying they have a condo for rent and send a fake lease. The bottom line is ,after I send the money I'm out of luck if they're a scam.

How do I protect myself and make sure that the person advertising the condo is the legit owner? What is standard as far as paying an up front percentage?

Thanks.

Short term rentals are hard to come by. You might try a vacation rental instead, many have monthly rates.

vrbo.com is easy to use and should have something for you.
