What is your opinion ..?
I was surprised at the amount of bad grammar here on Q/A and certain words are spelt differently.

Yes.
A lot of the spelling rules are also not consistent like with the word "pretty" for example . Phonics rules are that the "e" in this word should be a short sound. This is not true for the letter "e" at all. IN this word, the letter "e" has the sound of the short "i". Why not spell this word "pritty" as it is pronounced? This is just one such example and then you have all of the silent sounds. What's the real deal with all of that ?
People who speak English as their first language are not necessarily aware which sound for A they are using when they use or read a word they have known . Of course, they are literate, whether they can explain the phonics system or not, because literate means capable of reading.
Because Hindi and Telugu languages are phonetic not English. Phonetic here means that you can predict the pronunciation from the spelling, and predict the spelling from the pronunciation ...
think that the way things are spelled is ridiculous. I have been learning Spanish for several years now and I'm always amazed at how simple the pronunciation and spelling is compared to English. If you understand the Spanish phonics system you are generally able to pronounce/spell words correctly the first time you encounter them, which is certainly more than I can say about English. I feel bad for anyone who is trying to learn English, since there are so many variations among the vowel sounds and diphthongs.

I don't think anyone want here is too concerned about their grammar or errors on Yahoo. It's more about getting your point across.
This is more like free writing where content is much more important than grammatical mistakes. I have to admit though that some of the questions and answers asked here are kind of weird.
For me this is like a hobby. Away from my technical job where everything has to be spell check three or four times.
Yea certain words are spelled differently but as along you understand it, I don't see a problem with that.

Spellings in english is hard...because so many words have extra letters that you don't need...like through...psycology.The fact that the spelling is far from phonetic - the same combinations of letters can stand for totally different words, like the "ough" in "tough", "though", "drought", etc.
Its pronunciation, and all the words that sound the same but arent, like see and sea, red and read . It makes it hard to follow ppl sometimes, especially when accents are involved.
In most words that end in "e", the vowel is
long (says it's name) bake, take, fate, smite, home, phone.
English is not as simple as it appears to be become it is a complicated admixture of several European languages, such as- Greek, Latin, French, German, English etc. Thus it possesses approximately 1000 000 words.

"certain words are spelt differently."?
Well... sometimes they are but not because of bad spelling but because of the proper use of English.
I certainly will NOT use a "z" in "organise", "realise" etc
and I WILL NOT drop the "u" in words like neighbour, colour, favourties, etc.
This is how we use English here in Australia and it is the correct way. I am very annoyed when people tell me to "learn to spell" when I answered or posted a question here.
Yes I DO make typos but I am a very good speller.
My opinion - you asked!
Cheers

Oh I have my BA and MS in journalism, so to come on here and see the atrocities that some people write in regards to spelling, grammar, slang, or just being lazy (u, ur, tho, dem,).
I mean whats the extra letter if you just look 100x more intelligent?
But I can't really say much because everyone goes through that stage (In this generation). I remember when I was 13-15 everyone thought it wuz so kool 2 tk lyke dis. den we all jus got outta it.

Poor spelling and grammar bother me a lot. Sometimes I won't even finish reading a question because there aren't any complete words being used. Our language has enough inconsistencies as it is without me having to decipher someone else's shorthand.

Yes indeedy! Of course some of it is short forms used by people thumbing text messages on phones or other PDAs, but for the typers there is no excuse.
It appears that we have a lot of school dropouts posting, or that school standards for spelling and grammar have disappeared.

The amount of people on here are at different levels, it is the
quality of the Q that counts. Tolerance makes a good teacher.

I ease my mind about it by assuming that everyone who posts an illiterate response does not speak english as a primary language.
And to the genius who says there isn't a word "spelt"...find a dictionary.

English is messed up even without slang and or jargon being thrown into the mix. Take for example the word cleave it can mean both: to adhere closely; stick; cling (usually fol. by to). or to cut off; sever: could these two definitions be more opposite? No wonder it is such a hard languange to learn.
