Uranium is too heavy. It can naturally undergo fission or it can be introduced to go fission and U235 is the best, but it is way too heavy to undergo fusion.
Even in the core of a sun the headiest element that can undergo fusion is Manganese (Mn25). Once a sun runs of that element it can only try to force Iron (Fe26) to undergo fusion and that is impossible resulting in an explosion of a nova at least.
We can duplicate the temperatures at the core of the sun, and plasma welders can even exceed them; but we cannot recreate the intense pressure. If we could then we might be able to force iron to undergo fusion, but that takes the volume and pressure of a star and we can't duplicate that pressure.
