United ***** College Fund, and all other such scholarships that are ethnicity-based. (I also oppose scholarships that are only for women, even though I am one. I think scholarships should be based solely on academics and need, not race or gender.)

I usually try to avoid answering questions, if I think I may appear rude. This question is striking a chord with me, though. I just turned 62, so the 50's were pretty much my first 10 years. Was it the greatest decade ever? No. But, at the time, it was the best decade so far. Our parents did everything in their power to make a better life for their kids than what they had. And, they did a fine job. I find I must take issue with at least a few of your comments, which appear to be presented as facts. In those days, most kids who left school illiterate either dropped out or flunked out. Teachers weren't "encouraged" to pass kids who shouldn't pass. And, corporal punishment was not permitted in our public schools, although the parochial schools did have it. Women were not forced into the kitchen. My mother supported our family for three years when my dad was disabled from an industrial accident when I was 5 days old. And, she was never barefooted! Premarital sex and resulting pregnancies did occur then, but it was not romanticized on TV. It was kept secret if at all possible. And, while equal pay for equal work has improved over the years, the Equal Rights Amendment did not pass. Even if it had passed, that was either at the end of the 60's or early in the 70's, not the 50's. I could go on and on.....

"Not all racial segregation laws have been repealed in the United States, although Supreme Court rulings have rendered them unenforceable and illegal to carry out. For instance, the Alabama Constitution still mandates that Separate schools shall be provided for white and colored children, and no child of either race shall be permitted to attend a school of the other race. A proposal to repeal this provision was narrowly defeated in 2004.
Redlining is the practice of denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking, insurance, access to jobs, access to health care, or even supermarkets to residents in certain, often racially determined areas..."

Oh it happens in schools not because of laws like back then but by choice. There are some racial groups who segregate themselves from others because of fear and lack of understanding. There are some open people who are in multi cultural groups though.
