PS3, theoretical question?

the 80 gig PS3 plays PS2 game by emulation right? That means software right? IN THEORY does this mean that with the right update or software that the 40 gig could as well? Or is there some kind of hardware in the 80 gig that is needed for PS2 games? (I know that the 60 had some PS2 hardware)

Anyway just thought I'd ask because the 40 gig CAN play CD, PS1, DVD, BR, PS3 etc.

There is a chip inside the 60GB / 80GB systems which enables it to play PS2 Games.

The early 60GB / 20GB versions received the PS2's GPU (EmotionEngine), but the later versions used emulation software, but still had the chip which allowed PS2 compatibility.

The 40GB lacks this chip and therefore no amount of software updating could allow it to play PS2 Games

I read an article saying Sony could add BC to the 40gb via software emulation but Sony can't be bothered because it then would require many updates and they rather spend there time developing other features for the PS3.

The 40 gb is missing the PS2's GPU so that's why it can't play PS2 games.
