Why does the red-tail hawk shreik while hunting?

We hear them make their plaintive cries as they circle over our area on the central California coast. I would think their cries would alert the prey and make hunting more difficult. So, what is the purpose of those shreiks? It can't be that they are calling to their mates, because 3 or 4 will be crusing the skies and they all do it.

Breeding season is quickly approaching and they are staking out their territories and selecting mates. Usually while hunting they will quietly perch and watch for food, though that is not always the case.

Red-tailed hawks do not make noises when hunting. They are generally not aerial hunters. They usually hunt from a perch. When flying they may see other hawks or crow or something that would elicit a call. That includes people. Often calls are to warm others of the same specie that they maybe trespassing.
