Help with a relationship decision?

I'm severely confused about where to go with my current relationship. He has no ambition to find a career or make something of himself, and instead chooses to be coddled by his mother. I love him dearly, he's seen me through some rough times and we've talked about having kids and backpacking the world together, even growing old together. Except he keeps making promises that he never follows up on, and I'm tired of having to teach him how to have a successful relationship. I don't know what to do anymore. I hate the thought us moving on and him being with other women and happy (which is totally selfish but I can't help it) and I feel like he's the only one who loves me. Should I ditch the morning hugs and surprise kisses because I'm afraid he won't live up to my standards?
