Republican party is currently the second largest party with 55 million registered members, encompassing roughly one third of the electorate. Founded in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers, the Republican Party rose to prominence with the election of Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president. The party presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction and was harried by internal factions and scandals towards the end of the 19th century. Today, the Republican Party supports a pro-business platform, with further foundations in economic libertarianism and a brand of social conservatism considered by some to be increasingly based on the viewpoints of the Religious.

The Democratic Party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792. Since the division of the Republican Party in the election of 1912, it has consistently positioned itself to the left of the Republican Party in economic as well as social matters. The economically left-leaning activist philosophy of Franklin D. Roosevelt, which has strongly influenced American liberalism, has shaped much of the party's economic agenda since 1932. Roosevelt's New Deal coalition usually controlled the national government until 1964. The civil rights movement of the 1960s, championed by the party despite opposition at the time from its Southern wing, has continued to inspire the party's liberal principles.

Ignore the people who say there is no difference between the parties they are either cynical or ignorant. There are many differences between the parties and there are also differences within the parties themselves (especially the democrats, Some democrats are hawks when it comes to foreign policy, some democrats are quite religious and side with the right on many social issues etc) Also the meaning of the terms that are used in American politics have different meanings in the compared to Europe. The traditional definition of the word "liberal" actually describes the views of American Republicans but in the US the term liberal is used with a different meaning and is used to describe the far left so just keep that in mind. A Democrat is considered on the "left" and people to the far left are deemed liberals/socialists/communists (these are pretty much derogatory terms in the US) is typically known as a supporter of government taking a bigger role in society, a more hands on approach where the government has greater influence in the day to day lives of individuals namely through a broader range of social services. The left believes the most critical issue is equality of life where as the right tends to emphasize freedom. The left believes that it is their job is to take care of the poor, they do this by increasing taxes and spending this money on social programs. They believe the government has a right to use your money as it sees fit to redistribute wealth, establish new spending programs in times of budget surpluses, and to return to you only that portion of your money which is politically expedient. Republicans are considered on the "right" end of the political spectrum while Democrats are on the "left." The far right generally is pro-religion, anti-bureaucracy, pro-military, pro-business and pro-personal responsibility. Republicans, are usually considered conservative (fiscally as well as socially), religious, pro-business and against the bureaucracy often associated with big government. They see big governments as wasteful and an obstacle to getting things done. …the money you earn is yours and that government in a free society has the right to take only as much as is needed to perform those limited functions, which are appropriate to it. Their approach is Darwinian in that the strong shall survive, cream rises to the top, etc.

Democrats want us to be a socialist haven like Europe in the next 4 years.

Republicans want us to be a socialist haven like Europe in the next 20 years.

Republicans used to stand for limited government and the Constitution, but they gave that up after Reagan. Now they are just Democrat-light.

Republicans are for the USA and democrats are for the UN.

Republicans support the Armed Forces and democrats support the ACLU.

Republicans believe in God and democrats believe they are god.

Republicans are pro-life and democrats don't think babies should get in the way of their fun.

I explained this before, here we go again. The democrats see you have 10 camels they tax you the 10 camels and give them all away to a underdeveloped country. the receiving country has a big camel BBQ. The republicans see you have 10 camels, they train you, and show you how to increase your herd to 500 camels then they tax you by taking 2 camels and give them to your neighbor then train him to raise more. camel dung smells like $$$$$$$
