Why Is The Entire United States So Hypocritical About The Subject Of S-e-x?

Yes this question pertains to music in the form of Cencorship

I saw a blog from one of those idiotic political talking heads last night and this guy was all worked up into a twist over 1.5 seconds of CGI butt in a game called "Mass Effect"

Thousands of Soldiers have died in Iraq and this blathering yim yam is wrapped around the axle about a video game.

Plus I was just answering Steve B's earlier question about The Superbowl Halftime show which reminded Me about that whole silly hypocritical Janet Jackson uproar

What is it about this country that People can watch such hideous tripe as "Hostel" where human Beings are tortured to death and not bat an eye but somebody shows a breast on TV for 1.3 senonds and half the population has a total apocalyptic meltdown?

And it's fine to have Death Metal bands talk about ripping guts out but Tipper Gore has to have a stroke over a Wasp album?

Does anyone else see the ludicrous Hypocrisy in all this?

Your thoughts?

Update:

I can understand that SGJ

And You have a very valid point

It just bothers Me that Horrific Violence is so accepted

Update 2:

Good Point about the FCC Sabes

Clarification

I am an American that loves America

And some thing YES should DEFINITELY be kept from Children

Hypocrisy and Cencorship annoy Me to no end however

Update 3:

Sounds like we are on the same page Huevo

Update 4:

Are you mad at Me Bloody Gore?

I have nothing per se against Deat Metal dude

I had to use something for an example.

Sorry if I offended You

Update 5:

Actually The Entire United States is, of course, way too broad of a generalization

I mean..a large segment of the population

Update 6:

Orangecat

Great Rant, and You are basically correct in every detail

Update 7:

Thanks Bloody Gore...I was afraid I had offended You

Great Points BTW

I agree with you 100%. I don’t understand the logic of why the topic of sex is such a horrible sin, yet most of the violence gets overlooked. However, it’s clear the main source of the nonsense is the religious right. But back to Janet Jackson, let’s talk about a ridiculous overreaction. Yes, I’ll admit that when I saw it live, I thought it was one of the most shocking and hysterical things I’d ever seen on live TV. Yet, if I’d been able to gaze into my crystal ball and see what the long-term effects would be from the wardrobe malfunction, I would have wished it never occurred. It wasn’t that great, I swear. The FCC has now become this modern day Puritan, dictating everything that we are allowed to watch and listen to. It finally was too much for even the great Howard Stern to overcome, since he was essentially forced off of free radio. The biggest reason why unwanted pregnancies are such a massive issue in this country is that we’re not allowed to talk about sex. Everybody is interested in the topic, but we have to pretend it’s a bad thing. Violence gets a virtual free pass.

As for Tipper Gore, she should have done a better job of parenting instead of obsessing over stupid lyrics. Maybe she’s blaming Ozzy for her son’s plight.

kosovo wants to be a democratic state and the United States will support any country that wants to do that. United States would rather have all of the country of Serbia become democratic but they don't want to. How can you hold back a group of people that want democracy? United States is united and for secession of the United States into many states is not an option because the many pieces can not protect the whole country. God bless the United States and may it always stay that way.

I guess it's because a lot of America is pretty conservative and religious and no matter what we say about freedom of religion, Christianity is having a huge impact on our government. Sexuality isn't exactly promoted into the Bible... but think about it gay marriage is prohibited by all the US States and guess what says homosexuality is wrong? The Bible. I'm not bashing Christianity, I'm just saying out government was based on religion and it's a huge part of why sex and nudity is looked down on in American politics and society.

I know in many schools, contraception isn't even taught because it means they're acknowledging that people will have sex before marriage and premarital sex is a big no no to the very religious. In more liberal schools like mine where only about 50% of the school is Christian, protection is taught because we know it's going to happen, so try to prevent the worse from happening.

Another reason may be because they WANT to distract people from what's going on in the war. We're not exactly kicking butt and politicians what us thinking about something else aside from the war.

I wholeheartedly agree with another answerer in that publicly fighting the concept of sexuality draws people away from bigger issues that should be questioned. In all the years Jerry Springer has been on I've never heard of groups protesting his show, yet having women parade around in bathing suits in a Miss America contest is 'wholesome'. You have one major chain store that will only sell cds that have been cleaned of bad language and yet it will sell R-rated movies with the same bad language right next to it. We are a society that has a fit if an English Lit teacher sends home "Catcher In The Rye" but doesn't bat an eyelash if "In Cold Blood" is sent home.

A lot of Americans think society is progressive but it isn't, especially when compared to countries outside of its borders. When the Janet Jackson incident happened my in-laws, who are British and live in England, called me and asked what the big deal was. They could not believe that something so little got the whole country worked up when there is poverty, lack of decent medical care, outrageous costs of prescription drugs, an educational system that in many areas is clearly lacking and a government that looks from an outsiders point of view unwilling to fix it.

Darth - it's not the media, the government or the fcc or even the PMRC (if you remember the pmrc caused record sales to go up after the labels went on - reversed effect)

The problem is the Religious Right aka "The Moral Majority" that all get offended quite easily when CONVENIENT...

They went after Ozzy, Halford & Dee Snider at 1 point, Jerry Falwell was always one of the driving forces behind it.

Any Outlaw game (Playstation2, I ain't upgrading again) is extremely offensive & would make mass effect look like something from cartoon network...

BUT - we always have people like Ted Haggard to come out of the closet or Larry Craig, all these religious supporters at 1 point or another get nailed...

The people who freaked about Janet are not the same ones that would watch "Hostel" after watching "The Passion" nothing depicts torture worst then that movie, not Saw or Hostel comes close....

Violence in movies is okay as long as it pertains to religion, Mel Gibson was excused from every movie that he did from these religious nuts after they pretty much protested everything he's done from being a suicidal cop in Lethal Weapon who says "the way I treat God is to hate him back" to playing a homosexual with a burnt face, countless criminals & so on

Heavy metal is the 80's was always bad, the music was that of the devil, until Stryper came along.... Then the music was okay because it CONVENIENTLY applied to religion.

The Christian Coalition has a huge influence on politics today.

This is where the problems lies, lays - whatever. sorry for the rambling rant & incoherent babble...

No matter how uptught or relaxed the laws can be, there will be individuals with conflicting viewpoints. Maybe this person flipping out was a Bible thumper who is into the whole "no sex before marriage" and doesnt work on Sundays and so on. I can see where that individual would take stuff out of context

And im sorry for all religious expirence, I wasnt bashing your religion but rather making a point

    Well give me cooties then!

Seriously, I don't get it how the moral majority can be so hung up on a natural phenomenon when you turn on the TV every day and see acts of violence almost constantly. I can without a doubt say that I have been desensitized to the whole thing and I'm not proud of it but that's just the way it is. If nothing else though, as a society we should let down our guard on such "immoral" topics as human sexuality and begin to teach others that to love and care is good and violence is not an ends to a mean.

Good God, I just sounded like a hippie right there.......

Edit: Ah crap, I did say ends to a mean didn't I. I think I meant.....ah, you probably figured it out already. Stupid dyslexia...

    Hi Darth..

I am not from the US, but I agree with you 10000%. The glorification of violence is so much serious than a naked breast or rear side...

The US have had a sexual revolution in the 60's...but somehow it was de-routed to some strange hidden place no one of the society leaders knows about. And I agree with several of the comments regarding it is a way to distract persons from the real issues that are mining the society...and violence is one of the most terrible ones.

Hey Darth, I have to agree with you all 100% behind this its because its because our goverment does does care about cencorship and just take look at all the music albums now have the the warnings of them now and alot of songs talk about sex and also look at all the video games that are out or coming out and its so much blood and gore in them now

  • 1 decade ago

Because our government uses sex as a way to hide the REAL issues: government taxes, maybe an upcoming draft, whats really going to happen at this years election, religion, homosexuality, things they don't talk about often, they SHOULD talk about. Lets face facts: Bush rather send send OUR family members to die in Iraq for some needless oil for some selfish stuck-up snots, yet if he had a son, he would not declare War because he would be too afraid of letting his son get killed. Religious people are another issue. They say homosexuality is wrong and this and that yet, those same people who talk trash about others and pointing the finger at others are at fault as well: stealing, lying, corrupting, killing, everything. To me, sex is the least issue here in our country. We should worry rather are we going to get accidentally shot by gang cross-fire rather than some superficial people judge us as humans incorrectly. What Janet Jackson is tame compared to what Dahmer or John Wayne Gacy did. They let O.J. off but keep Nelson Mandela in jail for over 20 years. Makes no sense. Hypocrisy uses sex as a hypocrisy when it isn't.
