Automatic Transmission Fluid Type?

I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 automatic GL. Can you tell me what "type" of automatic transmission fluid I should use in my car?

Just being picky but...Mercon or Mercon V IS correct for all the applications listed previously EXCEPT the E and F series after 03 which have the 6.0 diesel and the Torqueshift transmission. The Torqueshift uses SP and will be damaged by other types of fluid. I know that the subject was specific to the Taurus and this was overlooked in the spirit of answering the askers question but with the list being posted I thought I better clarify this for anyone copying the list for reference. The bulletin referenced was intended to specifically name the vehicles affected by the phasing out of Dexron/Mercon and can be misleading if not read in it's entirety. E and F series NOT using the Torqueshift transmission WILL use Mercon V.

As others said, Ford hasn't used type F in Auto Transmissions since the first president Regan era.

Originally it called for Mercon (It's actually printed on the transmission dipstick)

However Ford has recommended moving away from it and going to the synthetic Mercon V in all cars calling for Mercon as it solves some torque convertor issues in many vehicles

Look in your owners manual, or on the tag under your hood. Putting the wrong fluid in your transmission can cause it to go out prematurely. Also worth noting is the need to change the automatic transmission fluid at the suggested mileage. Unlike motor oil, which results in gradual wear, tranny fluid breaks down to a point where its useless and your tranny will go out and need rebuilt.

Type F is wrong, wrong, wrong. You would use Mercon III also known as Dexron (Motorcraft# XT2QDX). Ford hasn't used Type F (in transmissions) since the early 80's. Mercon V (five) is also formulated to use in place of Dexron.

This is a good example of why you should not ask questions on the internet. Mostly you just got stupid answers.

Type F is wrong, wrong, wrong. Just forget you ever came here, and get some real information some place else.

Mercon (which is just Dexron) is right. It may be printed on the dipstick. Let's hope so.
