I raced a Harley today?

I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed to

PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really twisting

sections of canyon road with no straight sections to speak of and

where most of the curves have warning signs that say "25 MPH".

I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those big-

cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where

handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone.

I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could

catch him, but it wouldn't be easy. I concentrated on my braking and

cornering. three corners later, I was on his fender. Catching him was

one thing; passing him would prove to be another.

Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the

mountain. I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly

got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I'd

manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but

when we came out he'd get on the throttle and outpower me. His

horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me

more determined than ever.

My only hope was to outbrake him. I held off squeezing the lever

until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an

instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of

his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before

the road straightens out and he would pass me for good.

But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I

stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the

canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see

him in my rear-view mirror.

Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before

he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I was no

match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest

section of road, where bravery and skill count for more than

horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him. though it was not

easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the canyon and I had

preserved the proud tradition of another of America's best bikes.

I will always remember that moment. I don't think I've ever pedaled

so hard in my life. And some of the credit must go to Schwinn, as

well. They really make a great bicycle.

Does anyone know where I can get a little 25cc motor for my Schwinn so I can stay ahead on the straights?

Ok - I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are lucky enough to be at Harley Race's school ( he does run one). My advice to you get off of YA. Shut your mouth, open your ears and do everything that Harley Race tells you to do if you want to have a chance in the business. If he tells you to wrestle under the name Suzie the Candy Ace - do it. Do whatever he tells you to do. The man is a legend, he knows the business inside and out. In addition he was trained by Stanislaus and Wladek Zbyszko back in the day. I'll even go so far as to tell you want that means - they were two of the top wrestlers back when wrestling was far more real than than it is today and they were two masters of "catch wrestling" or "shoot fighting". What that means for you is that for all those years in the business there was nobody that wanted to mess with Harley in a real fight. It also means that it doesn't matter if you are 50 years younger than him and built like Batista. Unless you have some very good legit skills I'd still put money on Harley to break your arm if you mess with him too much. So - if you are in his school call yourself James Cross like Harley says. Do your best to do exactly what he says, when he says and how he says and you'll be way ahead of 99.9% of the rest of the guys trying to get into the business.

    So good, So good.

Keep in mind that 80% of all Harleys since 1973 are still on the road today. The other 20% made it home.

At least my 83 Sportster runs each time I hit the starter button.

It has even taken off with out me!!!

You deserive a 3 beer toast for this story.

That story was funny... about 20 years ago when I first read it.. the dragon is in NC. I saw a Harley trike the other day with a moped strapped to the back as a spare. pulling a Goldwing on a trailer?!!

Hey "chopperchopster", you are a fool. Do you accually think anyone believes you? I own a road king and three sportbikes and have been riding for 20+ years. The only thing that can beat a sportbike is another sportbike. Good try though, toughguy.

Great story. I've even seen a Vespa GTS (and no he didn't pedal) beat out a HD. In a lot of cases it's the better rider that comes out in front. Esp. in places like "the Dragon" in TN

Check out places liek 1977mopeds.com or Check otu the Moped Army website. They should know.

Myself and two other HD riders got a kick out of your story.

    I doubt we'll be trade'n for a Schwinn.

We all agree that Schwinn seat may be uncomfortable for a guy with balls your size.

Great story! I think you should submit it to Neil Young or Arlo Guthrie to create a song.

Took me a while to realize that you meant that you were riding a bicycle. Cute story, made me chuckle when I realized that.
