I can't afford Photoshop. Can you recommend something?

I don't want to download an illegal copy (that would be naughty) but the full Photoshop package is £500 on Amazon.

All I want to do is touch-up some photo's, the odd animated gif and a bit of, well, 'Photoshopping' on some images.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper (or free) alternative? I've seen Photoshop Elements, but I could quite figure out if it was a complete package, or an add-on to Photoshop?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Cheers Dave. I've already got one of them, but it all goes on the mortgage!

    A job?

Nah... Download the GIMP - it's excellent.

    Picasa for minor tasks.

EDIT: Elements would do for you, if it's minor stuff - it's a standalone, slightly cut-down version of photoshop, and it ships free with printers and scanners.

photoshop elements is a basic version of photoshop. It should cover most all you want to do.

You could also check out The Gimp. It's a free image editor. It's not as polished as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, but if you're looking to not pay anything, it may fit the bill.

Photoshop Elements is the "home" version - a cheap alternative to a full blown Photoshop.. it used to be called Photoshop LE (limited edition).

But for free Paint .NET or GimpShop

    GIMP http://www.gimp.org/ GIMPshop http://www.gimpshop.com/ or Paint.NET http://www.getpaint.net/

(Paint.NET started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool.)

I trust Rowz. it truly is ultimate to study images with a digital camera, fairly once you're fist starting up out. or you certainly isn't reliable at images. you'll only say: 'Yeah, my images suck, yet I actually have Photoshop to cause them to tremendously.' i wager it truly is why actual everyone except for one individual and myself are suggesting you no longer get Photoshop. yet another great reason that someone has did not indicate why Photoshop isn't reliable for a newbie photographer, is because of its value; $one hundred for aspects, and $750 for CS3. even once you've the money, is it extremely worth it? No. the reason being, with that $one hundred or $750 you should purchase a very respectable lens. you should understand, the lens makes a digital camera what it truly is. you've a $5,000 digital camera and a crappy lens, and nonetheless come out with crappy images. With that reported, save your money and get an invaluable lens. Dont settle for a crap one. back to the first situation i discussed. once you're making significant adjustments in Photoshop, your no longer a reliable photographer, now you're a digital editor. images takes skills as photographer, and modifying images in Photoshop takes information in modifying. in spite of everything this, i'm no longer declaring Photoshop is undesirable. i'm only declaring falling back on it even as only starting up out is. You as a newbie desire to entice close and understand the basics. in the different case your Photoshoped images will tutor undesirable to boot. have you ever even studied images? such issues as Composition, rule of thirds, emphasis, direction, and lights, only to call some. Like I reported, without those, in spite of Photoshop your images will be crap. So, you'll no longer have certainly wasted money on a digital camera you dont comprehend a thanks to apply, yet also $one hundred+ on Photoshop. speaking of squandering invaluable money, Photoshop is a vast, huge software that takes a lengthy time period to understand, even only the basics. there are finished college classes committed to Photoshop; this can inform you something. in spite of everything this, and also you nonetheless desire Photoshop as a newbie, a minimum of take some practise both in intense college, college, or a minimum of purchase some books masking it; that are round $50 each. enable me only say, i take advantage of Photoshop, and enjoy it. yet, i do no longer position self belief in it to get reliable images. because of this I took quite a few practise over images. desire this permits.
