Is "Homework Help" a euphemism for "Do My Homework"?
You hardly ever see anybody post something in this section where they've actually tried to do the work. For once I've just seen a question where a person has asked for an explanation because they genuinely need help.
Would it not be quicker for these people who post "Help - differentiate this equation" to just do it themselves?

Yes, because most of the people have not even made an attempt to complete his or her homework.

Like others in the same vein, I don't now respond to questions where it's obvious the poster has just pasted in the homework question he's been set. Most will recognise these questions, of the sort 'Discuss the importance of ambiguity in Macbeth, with examples', or 'Solve these simultaneous equations', where it's obvious the poster has not made any effort. Sometimes the laziness is evident in questions where the asker could just have keyed a few words into a search engine.
On the other hand, if the poster has made some attempt, and has come up against a hurdle he's finding difficult to get over, that kind of question is usually more interesting to respond to, and rather than give a worked out response, I think it more helpful to give guidance on the methods by which the answer can be arrived at.
All the same, it would be nice if those benefitting from the answers and pointers given here could occasionally acknowledge the help given -- remarkably often, there's no response of any kind. Courtesy's not an expensive commodity.

I understand and agree with your sentiments, however I have to wonder if the people asking for help know how to research. When I give an answer I only give them links where they can find the information they're looking for and where they will have to actually find the answer themselves. I'll stop there before I'm accused of ranting.

i think it works at several levels..some put the actual question up as they plain do not understand the question.so would not know how to get an answer..some are just asking to be pointed in the right direction..some are in trouble know it and are straight about it..lets face it that takes guts.there are some that on the face of it are just lazy...tut humans...just not perfect...lol

Yes, but people are lazy. I saw this one kid post his entire math worksheet on here and put something something like "Math help please????" as the question. It was clear that the person simply didn't feel like doing the work. I have more respect for people who are just stuck on something really do need help. It drives me crazy!

agreed. it is better to ask for an explaination if you really need help... or show where you have gotten lost in the question... but most of the times they don't even look at the question for a good 15 mins without squealing for help.

Woodpecker can only be a noun. It is the name of a thing (a bird in this case). Swallow can be a noun (a bird) or a verb (to swallow). A verb is a "doing word". Hope that helps :-) xx

Yes it would be...but they're lazy. I didn't have the internet to help me with my homework so most times I just had to figure it out on my own.

I ignore the questions where it is clear that the person isn't trying to do any work on their own.
