Laptop and wireless connection?

OK for the LIfe of me I cant get my laptop to connect fully at my apt but works fine at the coffee shop or whatever that has wireless... I dont know why it just says detecting proxy or finding site but never finds anything... It says connected but i cant get on the internet.. I have set it for automatically detecting the settings or whatever that is under internet options... and its set up right as far as i can tell... Im not at all new to wireless and this is the first time i have EVER had such problems! TECH savy's please help...

what about wireless lan.. i can use that right to get the internet?

Update 2:

well it wont let me set up an actual network for wireless internet.. the router is upstairs in the 2nd floor apt.. It just picks up the wireless internet when i turn it on usually but not in this apt.

broadban ... do people still use dial-up lol

    Well I need to know what type connection were dealing with, broadban or dial-up ?

    In your router, you have internet port and LAN ports. Make sure that your modem line is connected to internet port and not the LAN ones.

    setup network from scratch with software that came with your access point or the Microsoft wizard
