TiVo versus Directv DVR?

How does TiVo compare to Directv DVR. I already have Directv service and if I want a DVR i have to lease one for 299.99 then pay 5.99 a month for service. If i buy a TiVo I can get one for 99.00 and then prepay one year for 129.00. The TiVo seems like a better deal, but do they compare in service? I need help deciding. Thanks.

The TiVo is a better purchase up front, but they do not last nearly as long as a Directv DVR. You're paying more UP FRONT for the DVR, but if you record things like movies that you essentially own now, it pays for itself in the first three years. It depends on how much you have in your pocket at the time of purchase.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

DirecTV DVR: More expensive up front, lasts longer

TiVo: Less expensive, less life duration

I've had TiVo for years and my folks got a DirecTV DVR so I've had some time to play with it.

I found the user interface and flexability more intuitive with the TiVo. The DTV DVR doesn't have the advanced features a TiVo has, like Swivel Search and connection to your home network.

While I've found the DTV DVR better than some cable models, the TiVo is still the creme of the crop.

You mean $29.99 not $299.99 for the DirectTV DVR, right?

TiVo is much more user friendly with more features.

However TiVo is more expensive and you need more wiring since it's a separate box, while the Satellite/Cable DVR is all in one with the decoder.

So it's up to you how much you value the extra features of TiVo. Here is a comparison thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.ph...

Directv has two dvrs. The one you quoted the price is for the hd dvr. But good news the price went down to 199.99 plus handling and possibly installation. That happened a few weeks ago for the hr20 or hr21. But the dvr without the Hd is 99. plus the handling and maybe the installation.

I love my Directv DVR! I basically record everything that is awesome then when the memory gets full. I delete all my unwanted shows. There is also a feature on there that is "Keep til I delete" so, you can save all your really good stuff.
