How much splash when kicking freestyle?
When you're doing freestyle sprinting is it okay for the kick to have a lot of splashing? How much of the foot should come out of the water? I'm just a recreational swimmer now but when I tried swimming for a year it seemed like I could outkick more experienced swimmers when we used the boards or fins.

Depends on the distance you want to swim. In a long distance only your heal will break the surface. In short sprints your entire foot might.
Since you legs have large muscles and provide little proplusion, kick only enough to keep your legs from sinking and adding drag.

In my swimming classes that I teach I tell my older kids to remember to keep the kick coming from the hip not the knees and make sure you keep your toes nice a floppy so i guess soft not pointed or flexed just keep those toes relaxed if your sprinting your heel should just break the surface with water splash still covering the heel it should look like rapid boiling water with minimal splash just think little fast kicks the fast you kick the fast you will propel through the water next time your in the water try kickign with a kick board on your front and then on your back so you can see if your making that boiling water action i hope this helps if it makes any sense also remeber to stretch before doing sprints pulled legs mucsles are not fun.

Well I was a champion in my age group when I was 11-13, im much older now but remember some, its the constant pressure in the water thats going to increase the speed in your freestyle as to splash can't really comment about that your feet need to be under water not comming out, I had to learn how to take less breaths and when did come up for air half my mouth was still in the water so swallowed alot of water, and when finished the 2 lap race felt like was going to pass out, but in the end I won, for me I was also very fast with the kicking board thing cause I have naturally wide feet haha not sure if that helped but I did well way back once apon a time. Was second in the state in my division in free style, was one guy that always had my number, but I was 1st in the state in Back butterfly and breast stroke.Still have my trophies and im 44 years old today can't swim that good now, but was fun when I did

Normally they fastest way is if there is no splashing, but it is hard to do that. I think a moderate splash would be coused if the foot is half out of water. But as it is freestyle, whichever way is fastest for you, will work

your feet should barely get an inch out of the water, but mostly your feet should stay underwater, I have seen some beginners on my year round and summer team kick as far as their legs could get out of the water, is was a disaster. it made them move slower, and they looked ridiculous!!!!
next time you go to the pool you should do 2 25's and time them separately, kick with your legs out of the water on one and one with your legsunder water on the second one
then you can see the difference for yourself
