Can parabolas open sideways? Like right/left rather than up/down?

If so, can someone tell me how I would distinguish that just by looking at the equation. Thanks!

    Yes, a parabola that "opens sideways" would be given by the equation x = y^2, or some variant thereof. Ones that open up and down will be given by y = x^2, or some variant thereof.

    x = y^2 is a parabola opening sideways.

    sure! just graph a square root function (graphers will not show the bottom half because it is invalid). But all you need to do is graph a square root function and it's inverse, and you will have a sideways parabola
