How do you respond to poorly-written questions?

If you come across a poorly worded question, where the askers intent is understandable, do you answer the question, or just berate them for having poor English skills?

Update:

Please explain why what you do is the right thing to do.

    Such question should simply be ignored unless you can determine the content to which the author of the question is referring to. I personally try and give such questions a shot however if I have no idea what they are on about I have to give it a miss.

    Answering a question with the intent to question the author's standard of English will be seen as chatting and failing to post an answer and therefore will most likely end you with a violation warning.

    If they're really pitiful, I just don't answer them. If I think English isn't the person's first language, though, or if he/she has asked an interesting question, I might answer it. It depends on the nature of the question, and how I'm feeling that day.

    I don't think I have much of an impact if I berate someone's poor writing skills. I'm more likely to give someone a lecture if he or she posts a question in all capital letters. Not using mixed-case letters is really rude, and some people just don't know that.

    I don't think there's any right or wrong way to handle this. It's up to each individual answerer.

    To answer your question;

    I personally do not attempt to answer a question when there is doubt as to what the person is asking. By answering them in the way you suggest by berating them is a violation of Yahoo's Guidelines for it is insulting in nature. My recommendation would be to not answer the question and move on.

  • I am fortunate in that I am instinctively a good speller and insist on proper punctuation but I recognise that for some spelling and grammar is a nightmare. I also recognise that if they have this problem they may also have benefits that I do not have. However, if, in spite of all your efforts, their question still does not make sense, then politely ask them to put it another way. But nothing can excuse the failure to click on 'Check spelling'

    I try to answer politely and helpfully, often because I feel that they will not get helpful answers from many people. There's no point in correcting someone's english although I do sometimes tell them their question is difficult to understand. I admit I sometimes answer abruptly if I feel a question is downright silly.

    I overlook it because there are a lot of foreigners using this site, who are still trying to learn & practice their English skills, some people are dyslexic or have a learning disability, & others are the weeny little 9 & 10-yr. old little bratty tots who don't belong here.

    If you understand the question you just do your best.

    You don't know if it is an unintelligent kid or an elderly person who is using the computer.

    My 80 year Mum is just learning. Just because her skills are lousy, there is nothing wrong with her mind. Think about it that way.

    I would correct their English and answer the question. I would correct their English to help them write better.

    If you correct anyone's spelling or grammar, you will get a violation, even if you did it in a nice way. Blah.
