How many words exist in the English language?

Not including names of people, places or things that have been created and have been given a name eg. Sony, Kleenex, KitKat etc. (Random I know, but it's just an example)

While there are millions of recorded words in the Oxford English Language database, on which the dictionary is based, in fact English has an infinite amount of words because of the various forms for each word, and because of creativity and inventiveness. I keep comming across stats like 600,000, but I don't understand where they come from.
