Oral surgeons do root canals?
I had a tooth that was like broke in half with a cavity and my dentis filled it anyways. Well now a year later it just started to hurt. So i went to another dentist and he said just from the looks of it i need a root canal. Should i get a root canal or get it pulled? I want to go to an oral surgeon so i can get put to sleep tho can they do that to give me a root canal?

There is a reason that dentists try to save teeth. If you lose one, you also lose any effect of the tooth directly opposite of it (above or below)I have had 2 root canals, one 20 years ago, and one 2 years ago. Believe me, they have made so many advances in this field, that there is no need to be afraid. You definitely will not need to be asleep. Good luck

yes oral surgeons do root canals. I recently had one done. I also just wanted my dentist to pull my tooth(is way in the back) but he said that if he pulled the tooth then the one that is above it would start to "fall" into the hole that was made by pulling the tooth. Root canals are NOT as bad as what some people seem to want u to believe. IF you have a great dentist like i do he will go thru the procedure with you step by step and show you a video of what will take place and answer all your questions before anything is set. Good luck

Generally you will need a referral to an oral surgeon, especially with insurance. I think they are considered a specialist. But no, you shouldn't need an oral surgeon. Now, some dentists just don't do root canals so all you need to do is call around to find a dentist with root canal experience. I settled on a dentist a couple of years ago and when I eventually needed a root canal, it turned out that he refuses to do them and sent me to an oral surgeon!! So, in short: it depends on your dentist. And don't feel dumb calling offices and asking about the dentist's specialties and level of experience with certain procedures. The receptionists are accustomed to those sorts of questions and expect them. Good luck!

Depends. I've had two root canals and my general dentist sent me to a dental specialist. He isn't an oral surgeon, but he specializes in root canals. It can be a long procedure so rather than my general dentist spending 2-3 hours on one root canal, he has this guy do it. He put a temporary crown on it for me and a week later I went back to my dentist for a permanent crown. My insurance covered 75% of the root canal and 90% of the crown.

I just had a root canal done and it didn't hurt that bad, I don't think you really need to be put under for it. Ask your dentist if it is worth getting a root canal. How much of your tooth is left and how extensive infection is and how long a crown would realistically last based on the damage. The drawback to having it pulled is if there is an opposing tooth it could irritate the gums where the tooth is pulled.

Not all root canals are created equal so be careful who does it for you.
Try and get results by people who have used who it is that you are considering.
If the oral surgeon does the R/C then he will after ward send you to a dentist for reconstructive surgery.
Pulling a tooth may lead to complicated situations by doing so- such as chewing problems or your appearance-

Oral surgeons don't do root canals, they do surgery (extractions, implants, etc.). Endodontists do root canals.

You tell your doc what you want..the cheapest route is to pull it. So of course the dentist is going to tell you to do a root canal for that money. It is what you want. But your regular dentist should be the one doing it.
