Long term effects of rat poison on a dog?
My 8 month old german shepherd became very ill last week, was lethargic and was bleeding from the mouth. I took her to the emergency vet and a clotting test determined she had somehow injested rat poison. She got a vitamin K injection and is on pills for 3 weeks. She is doing quite well now, considering she almost died. A little lazier now, but I'm sure she's still recovering.
What long term effects will this have on her? Will it shorten her life span? Could it have damaged any of her organs? I've noticed she sometimes limps now, could it have weakened her hips somehow?
I'm assuming the rat poison was warfarin, since it affected her clotting. We do not have any at our house, I don't know how she got into it.
Her hips were great before, maybe it is just bruising.

It could have damaged her organs, yes, since rat poison causes hemorrhaging. Depending on the level of damage her lifespan could be shorter.
GSDs are prone to hip dysplasia, but I'm not sure if the poison could have manifested it sooner. The limp could be a completely unrelated injury, or your dog could be manifesting hip dysplasia early, or she might have a nasty bruise on her leg as a result of the internal bleeding from the poison. You might want to see your vet again and ask about that, since there could be many reasons for a limp.

I don't think that there will be any long term effects. My father and I have a blood clotting disorder in which we both take or have taken various blood thinners. Sometimes when on blood thinners your blood will get way to thin for a variety of reason. It has happen to my father before. It is a little scary, but after the intial danger has past I don't think there is any long term danger. Now I am not a vet, nor a doctor, so I couldn't say for sure, but it sounds like your dog will now leave a normal life.

Depending on the dog, and/or rat poison, there might or might not be any long-term effects. Here's a qoute from wikipedia.
"Mouse and rat poisons containing cholecalciferol cause hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia in dogs. Symptoms include depression, loss of appetite, vomiting blood, weakness, and shock. Treatment is as above for recent exposure. When hypercalcemia occurs (which can take 1 to 2 weeks), treatment is with intravenous fluids (saline), diuretics, corticosteroids, and calcitonin. ***Long term prognosis is good once the dog is stabilized.***"

it verry on the age of the dog eight monts is verry yong and the immune system probly weekend your licky though if this was an old dog you might have hap more complactions because of age your dog will be fine she has a eight out or nine out of ten life expincty and thats verry good also ask the vet if he could tell what type of rat poision it was if he says its synicterirt rat poision then you need to be aware that it is verry verry strong and you would need to keep an eye out for her if he says frigmat rat poission then its okay because its is for small ratts not big rats so its lighter than synicterirt either way keep an eye out for her and ask for a healing medicine for rat poission call ritardomein to help . i wish you the best of luck . oh and one mre thing UPDATE HER ON ALL SHOTS ESPECALLY RAIBIES ! A.S.A.P ! and it is probbaly brusing or soreness her hips will be fine gat a CATSCAN OR X-RAY just to be sure though CHECK THE COLOR OF HER EYES see if the brightness and glossyness is still thare IF THE COLOR IS FADEING TAKE HAR TO THE E.R IMMIDTLY for a eye colshiotion sounds funn but please just do it ! and again i wish you the best of luck ! :)

It all depends on the type of rat poison that she ingested. That's what determines long-term effects, if any. Do you know what type she got into, what the a.i was? If so, your vet would be able to answer this better and give you all the info you need to know.

Yes, it has damaged some of her internal organs.
Irreversible.
These are questions best answered by the attending vets during the emerg.
Gd. luck. to you and dog.

no it couldn't weaken hips,,,
if you suspect hip issues,,, did you get your dog from a reputable breeder?
also,,, where and HOW did your dog get access to rat poison?? did someone try to kill your dog?
