What questions should you ask yourself when considering medical school?
I'm thinking about going from science to medicine (radiology), but not sure what are some of the major issues to consider before making the jump. Any advice, especially from a med student or doctor, would be appreciated.

If you're considering Radiology as a career choice, do some homework on program requirements and the career itself. Run searches for "radiology programs" and look at several. You should enjoy being a detective and working in that physical environment.
As for med school, your MCATs are a major consideration and the med schools you consider aplpying to should be relatively affordable unless price is no object. Be prepared to relocate. If your application is considered and you get an interview, you will probably be asked at some point why you want to be a doctor. Don't say "because I want to help people". Everyone and their mother says that. It may be true but try to be both different and honest about your answer.
You should be prepared to work with little sleep. Remember that you can't learn everything so don't try. If you graduate med school, you'll have to apply to a Radiology residency program.
Below is a link to the career of Radiology and some of the things that should be considered before setting out in this direction. I hope it helps you.

I'm not a med student but I am a nursing student and have lots of friends that are med students. Number one reasons a lot of med students leave after a little while is they don't know what they are getting themselves into. If you can find a radiologists(if that's what you would like to do) office, let them know that you were considering med school and becoming one, they might let you shadow or come in for a tour and to watch the Dr. work. This would also give you insight on what your job would be like once you were finished and if you would be happy with it. Also make sure that you know with any medical field there is going to be SO much hard work, studying and most of all time that goes into it. Now and later in life (i.e. being on call and having to miss your kids ball game possibly) Just make sure you are thinking about it for the right reasons.
You are very wise already to be asking people and polling for the wisdom of others who have been there. Best of luck in making your decision.

Its hard for me to tell you what questions to ask, really rather than say (1) Do you like to spend the day in a very dark room alone looking at films and dictating into a microphone, perhaps you should go to your local hospital and ask to shadow a MD in the profession you are considering. You will get a feel for it pretty quick. Almost all hospitals will do this.
