It depends on the level of play. The NBA rules do not provide for technical fouls on the crowd. In the NCAA, Section 10, Article 1 provides that: "The officials may call indirect technical fouls on either team when its supporters act in such a way as to interfere with the proper conduct of the game." So chanting profanity by itself would not appear to justify a technical foul. According to Wikipedia: "Home teams can be assessed technical fouls on their crowd for excessive use of artificial noise." So fans using profanity on bullhorns might result in a technical foul.

No they can not call a technical on the crowd for being loud there there to ref the players and the game and call technicals on them not the crowd profanity or not. If this did really happen i hope they fired the ref for doing that.

  • well, it kinda depends on what they are saying. i think that no1 should be saying anything in the crowd.....it is so hard for the refs-they are only human. whenever i hear people saying stuff about the refs-or even to the refs, i want to go to them and tell then that they should ref a game or 2 and see what it is like to have a million people yelling at you because of a bad call.

i don't think you can call a technical on a fan; the referees could call secruity and have guests removed if they are disrupting the game...

if a player uses profanity, then yes - the refs have the authority to call techs on the players (actually for any reason they want....) [but remember refs in the nba are being audited w/ film etc... so they won't call plays that aren't apparent... they may lose their jobs...]

Yes, the home team can be charged with a technical foul at any point during the game reguardless of posession!

    Not for that

But the crowd can get a tech, if they create artifical noise, for example on a free throw attempt or if they throw foreign objects on the court

Depends on the level of play...pro I don't think so, college, high school, jr. high, they most certainly can call a tech against the "bench" of that team
