Complete this old story. Young man came to Socrates seeking knowledge, Socrates silent -walked away -?

Young man followed him all the way through the city to the beach and went into the water. Socrates grabbed him, held him under the water, the young man broke away - "Why did you do that?"

    the young man wants knowledge.

    socrates holds him under the water, and when the student cries, "i need air!", socrates tells him that the student will only gain knowledge if he desires it as much as he desired air.

    Can't reference this - nor have I heard of it. But it's food for thought. I would think that facing death and the instinctive desire for survival, one would never feel more alive, or appreciative of life itself. It is said that to know oneself is virtually impossible, but an essential pursuit. Facing death may simplify priorities in a way nothing else can...
