I have a computer with USB 1.1 Can I use an external hard drive with USB 2.0 to transfwe files?

My computer is an HP with 550mz and 256 meg ram.

    Yes you can. Only that it works at 1.1 which means the data transfer rate is much slower ( 12Mbps as opposed to 480Mbps)

    You can, but the transfer process will be very slow if you are moving a lot of data. One thing to consider would be to purchase a USB 2 add-in card and install in your computer. These are relatively inexpensive and the time save during large file transfer will worth the cost. I would also suggest upgrading your computer. The one mentioned is very old by todays standards.

    yes if it is backwards compatible with usb 1.1, i would check, most stuff is nowadays

    you need to adapt two1.1's to one 2.0/power requirements i believe
