    this tattoo read "Koku-shi-mu-so(国士無双)".

    (the photo is turning inside out.)

    which means the man who is the most distinguished in the country.

    国= the country

    士= the man

    無双= there is no distinguished man next to him.

    I think it's Chinese. There are 4 characters and I can get three: 双爱something国. Ironically, the 'something' looks like a very simple character! I could be totally wrong with what I've written, but the way it's been designed is quite uusual. Ahhh! I've just looked again - the problem is, it's a mirror image. The words I have written are in the wrong order. OK... the now second character might be Japanese because we don't really have anything like that in Chinese. Sorry about that, let's hope someone else knows more.

    I can't see it too clearly and honestly I'm not very good at neither Chinese nor Japanese... but it's Chinese/Japanese. They both use hanzi (Chinese characters) and kanji (Japanese adoption of Chinese characters).
