Per your policy, the amount your carrier will pay is less the $500 deductible. The deductible is normally refunded once they recover from the other carrier. Some carrier will waive the deductible if they have confirmed that the other carrier is going to pay for the loss.
So your carrier had every right to pay less the $500 deductible. If they waived it, consider that very good service. If they paid it to you, they should not ask for it back.

This is very common when both parties have the same insurance carrier. The claim was probably opened under your policy but was paid under the other party when it was decided they were at fault -- most likely the adjuster simply made an error and applied your deductible to the settlement.

Deposit the check, they won't ask for it back. Check the declaration page of the policy, see if you have UMPD coverage. If you do, that would be the reason they gave you the check for $500.00. That said, when you purchase BIPD coverage, always purchase UM and UMPD. UMPD means you don't have to pay a dedutable if you are hit by a driver without insurance.
