IMO, they really don't do a very good job. If your car is old enough and to the point where you should have your system cleaned, bring it to a shop that has a fuel injection system cleaner, it'll probably cost you about $100-$125 but it'll do a great job. If you do choose to use the bottled cleaners, get an expensive one. You do get what you pay for when it comes to those and its better to spend $15 and get something out of it then to spend $5-$7 on some garbage.

For the fuel system I'd probably go with Seafoam as my first choice. Just get a can, drive your tank to being nearly empty, go to the gas station, put the can of Seafoam in FIRST with your car OFF, and then fill up the tank to the correct # of gallons. This will indeed help clean out the fuel lines and injectors. I'd also recommend replacing your fuel filter after this, which is fairly cheap and simple to do yourself in most cars. I'd do this every 9K-15K miles depending on how you drive. Hope this helps!

Be sure to fill your tank up all the way after putting that stuff in. B-cause it is basically alcohol and it burns real hot to clean your valves&fuel chamber. If you mix it to strong(not a full tank of gas) you can raise your exhaust temperature so high you melt your catalytic converter and block your exhaust system. It has a little oil in it to lubricate the injectors but so does a good grade of gas. I personally use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) ounce a year with a tank full of the good stuff,b-cause I run the cheap gas normally.

Absolutely they can work. If you car has deposits due to age or cheap gas, a cleaner can fix it, at least for a while. I've had good results with techron, regain, and also, believe it or not, Dollar Tree cleaners. If you performance is poor due to deposits, you'll see results within a tank, often sooner.

Source(s): personal experience - my car stumbled every time when feathering on the gas at 30-40. I thought probably fuel injectors. Added fuel injector cleaner and the stumble was completely gone.

I don't know anyone that has opened up their engine to show me it works so who knows. My take on it is if it's a name brand one it can't hurt and they are not that expensive to do every few months so why not. If you try some pay attention to your gas mileage, that will give you an idea if it's doing any good.
