Excell Question, Reference the cell above?

How do I reference the "cell above" another cell. Even if I insert a row?

I have tried the $ constant, but if I insert a row, I have to "fix" my reference.

Basically I have a home made budget in excel to track my account balance based on bills and outstanding checks, If I insert a new expense I have to "fix" it.

Yes I know quicken is better. But if I want to do things that don't make sense that is my business! :)

it should be as simple as .. typing = in the cell you want to have the reference in and then click on the cell you want the reference to be (you can also add additional things like ..say you want your new cell to be 5 less than the cell referenced type = (then click your reference cell then -5) and press enter ..if you add rows it doesnt make a difference it still references the cell you clicked.

    I hope this makes sense.

just go B2 or what ever cell. dont use the $, then it will keep it on B2 always, even if a row is inserted.

    for example.

    =b2/5.
